Well I'm about 10 min. from you rose and we got enough rain to drown a brown dog, no hail though

I got hail, in St Clair, not big enough to damage anything but did put a few small dents in my brothers car while he was driving home.

Thats the Sydney weather for you..

How common is hail in Australia?

We have freezing rain here this morning.....I bet that's weather few of you have dealt with.
It basically brings driving to a halt.
The forecast for the next couple of days is varied.....snow, freezing rain, and sleet.
Take your pick.

Was at a work conference at Rooty Hill RSL and just about all cars there would have hail damage including (luckily) my old worn out Ford work car. The VW and other near new car was safe back at Richmond. Looks like it went through a strip to Kings Park where there was also severe damage.

Just got an email from a mate who lives somewhere in the Syndey area, who picked up a brand new Pajero on Friday, and is taking it to the body shop today - roof, bonnet, A-pillars and a cracked windscreen - to say he's not happy is a bit of an understatement.

seems to happen every few years in sydney.. can remember 2 or 3 other times it has happened and all the cars they show on the news with massive damage to them... one year i think it hit a car dealership or two... seem to remember them transporting the cars interstate to sell as people in syd were too aware of recent hail damaged cars etc...
see.... air and water do mix 😉

Hey,

I got caught in it driving to norwest in sydney. Was pretty scary too!
My car looks like a bloody golf ball now but I saw a lot worse driving through parts of castle hill.
There were lots of trees and powerlines down, no power obviously, and shredded gum leaves and hailstones lining the roads.
Lucky it wasn't the notch, and I am insured.Lightning struck our house the week before!
Mother Nature seems pretty pissed.

Cheers, T 👍

I had a track day at Winton in the M5 on Friday and (despite checking beforehand) went through a rear pad - so left it on the street when I got home and drove my daughter's car to a party yesterday. Scored about 8 small dings. The 54 Beetle seems to be OK though.

Freezing Rain

Rain that falls as a liquid but freezes into glaze upon contact with the ground.

Sleet

Sleet is defined as pellets of ice composed of frozen or mostly frozen raindrops or refrozen partially melted snowflakes. These pellets of ice usually bounce after hitting the ground or other hard surfaces. Heavy sleet is a relatively rare event defined as an accumulation of ice pellets covering the ground to a depth of a ½" or more.

_______________________________________________
Freezing rain is considered the worst ot the two winter weather conditions and basically is a situation where the ground or objects at or near ground level are colder and below the freezing point. Upon contact with these surfaces, the rain instantly or very quickly freezes. Typical objects which get coated with freezing rain are roadways, vehicles, power transmission lines, and trees. Freezing rain is virtually impossible to drive on.....transportation comes to a roaring halt...there is simply no traction because everything is coated with ice.
Accumulations of ice on power lines always spells big time trouble, often not only breaking the lines and shorting them out, but often pulling down and and collapsing the wooden poles and even huge metal power transmission towers. Losing power lines is one thing, but when you lose a long series of transmission poles and towers, that's quite another thing.
Three years ago we had a huge storm go through here, and at one point about 250,000 people were without power here in the area for up to seven days in the dead of the winter. We had over 1500 power company employees come here from all over the US to restore electric power. They did a remarkable job of restoring power in a relatively short period of time. If an freezing rain/ ice storm event is followed by a period of colder weather sometimes as low a 0 degrees Fahrenheit ( -17.7 Celsius), you are really screwed.
The Continental US has the most violent weather of anywhere on earth. Snow blizzards, freezing rain, and sleet are on one end of the spectrum, and tornados and hurricanes are on the other end.
This morning the forecast for places in the mid section of the US like Kansas City, MO to have up to one inch of ice accumulation......that will make for major problems for those residents.
