I've just seen the news where a Kay Stanley has been killed in her Beetle whilst crossing a train line..

Her fiancee Brett Vogels is still alive, but thats really all I know about both the car, the couple and this horrible accident.

According to Facebook, the couple were from Mornington, which sorta made me think that they may have had something to do with the Victorian VW community. Anyone fill in any info gaps here?

Hi

The comments on that page strike a raw nerve. I must say we don't have many level crossings in Sydney, but whenever I do cross one I do it with a great of trepidation.

Obviously that person doesn't know the meaning of tact or decent manners. There was a good point there, but made in a disgusting way.

One thing i have noticed since moving from Perth to Brisbane is that people dont wait for the lights to stop flashing at crossings before they go here. As soon as those boom gates are up, they're off! So many times i've seen boom gates go up, but then come down again, as another train is about to come. Too many impatient people.

Why must we rush so much? Isn't it better to get there in one piece than not at all? Better late than never? I know it didnt pay off for the motorbike rider outside my work at the Port of Brisbane yesterday. He didnt take much consideration for his own life or how his actions might affect others. I know i certainly didnt want to see his lifeless body being put into a body bag while his motorbike was crushed into the front of a truck, and scattered across the road. You could see the devastation on the poor truck drivers face, he is the one who will be replaying it over and over in his head. Seems the motorbike rider was in that much of a hurry he needed to pass 2 trucks on Port Drive. He then attempted the 3rd but went head on with a Semi heading in the opposite direction. All for what?
You can't ever say it's "common sense"... that's an oxymoron, as sense isn't common, some people totally lack it. All we can hope is people learn from these accidents.

As a train driver, I couldn't have said it better myself.
It's sad, but completely avoidable.
Whether blatant stupidity or a momentary lapse, if you get in front of me, I'm gunna win, EVERY TIME. I can't stop, can't swerve. The outcome is inevitable.

For the record Steve, there's 12 level crossings on the Sydney metrop ( Cowan to Emu Plains or Macarthur) + 5 pedestrian only crossings. Most of these on the Blacktown to Richmond Line.

RIP Kay Stanley.

That Death of Common Sense web site would be the most poor taste load of rubbish I have ever seen on the web. If there was a point to be made it was lost in the avalance of ffing and blinding. What an idiot. This young lady makes one mistake and pays with her life, a high enough price to pay for her and her loved ones with out some moron making ill informed comments about someone he wouldnt even know. Death of Common Sense clearly don't realise how upsetting reading this rubbish would be to Kay Stanleys family.

I'll disagree with you & I'll tell you why.

Somewhere in Victoria, as I type, there's a bloke on workers comp/stress leave.
He's killed someone. he's had to make a police statement, an official railway statement, the hand wringers (psychologists) will be checking on him, & if he's "lucky", he won't have to front the coroner.

Yet, he's done nothing wrong.

During the course of his daily duties, someone else f#cked up big time.

Now I'll tell you how this works from the other side of the coin.

All a driver can do in this situation is throw the brakes into emergency & hit the horn. That's it.
Then you watch it all unfold in front of you.
You know what's going to happen, but your powerless to do a thing about it.

The "best" you can hope for, is the car doesn't go under you & derail the train, killing or injuring you or your passengers.

Sympathy for the family, yes.

Sympathy for a bloke who ,through no fault of his own, had a front row seat to someone else's destiny, definitely.

But when I start having sympathy for the victim, it will be time to change jobs.

i don't disagree with what the website is trying to say but it's said in the wrong way. and after hearing what spook has to say and with him letting us in on the other side of the coin, i really do think the person that comes off the worst in the situation is the driver.
in saying that, i do have sympathy for the poor lady.

for the record, i live on the richmond line and quite consistently see people do stupid shit to avoid being held up by the boom gates, both drivers and pedestrians.

Reckon the clown who made the statement needs to think about the way he expresses himself, it's not neccessarily what he said but the way he said it, gives his comment no credability at all. Is that on a forum? if so whats the address.

Its terrible for everyone involved, but they do say in the article about driving into the sun, so it is quite possible that she didnt see the flashing lights, and that it is just a tragic accident for everyone.

I don't usually post to these, but will because of spooks comments

He was a driver, my ex was a guard (approx 10 yo). In NSW the guards take command when things go wrong. The driver usually sits in the cabin once the accident has occurred. I guess this is so no more trauma is thrusted upon them (driver) as they are usually traumatised enough having watched someone go under, knowing they may have killed them.

So, accident occurs, and the guard HAS to get out and attend. They have to ascertain what has happened. Not usually talking to the driver (except by radio) adn then just getting out and going to find the person/s. They (guard) then call the authorities. The guard then has to stay with the person/s.

My ex has had to do some crap things. Things that left him in a pretty bad ways some days.

As spook says it doesn't just stop at the accident either. They go through a whole heap before going back to work, but usually it's pretty quick. Mick could return most times in a few days. He was ex-army so very little of it affected him, some were a few weeks though. And he was the same as spook. Once he began to sympathise with the victims, he stopped being a guard

Every time it happens it affects the victims, the drivers, the guards, and their families as well.

So the big point is... Don't challenge trains. As Spook said. They CANNOT TURN like a truck. Braking isn't the same as other vehicles.

BUT until everything about the accident comes out...don't judge. It may have been she had windows up, stereo going, morning sun blinding her and thus she travelled into the front of the train. She didn't see it, she didn't hear it, and she got caught in the cross fire. I seriously doubt she meant it. She was getting married. I doubt she meant to cause all those left behind the pain they would now be feeling. Had she known that going across the track would end in her own death...I REALLY doubt she would have done it.

But other than to say 'condolences to the family' why is it we seem to think its an opportunity to lecture?

I can tell you, as some one who had to read peoples comments about her own brothers death a month after it occurred, in a NATIONAL magazine, it hurts those left behind, not the one who has died. KAY CANNOT READ IT. People who are already hurting enough already can. And if her finances name seems familiar, then maybe he is a part of the forum and reading all this stuff, which is probably only adding to his pain.

We don't know the full details of that accident. Maybe we never will. The guy who wrote those comments in Tazz link...is entitled to his opinion. Everyone is. But now is not the best time to really say 'she shouldn't have crossed the lines'

Now is the time to simply say...we are thinking of your family, and hope time will help heal your wound. Our sympathies go too you.

And then let the family grieve.
