Rod Penrose has a type 181 for sale in original unrestored condition at he moment LHD for around $8,000.

Here is the link:
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/viewtopic.php?tid=66928

There are also 2 fully restored cars for sale at he moment:

1. Alistair Terry of Coffs harbour (1969 model) for around $35K (look at last page of this issue of VW Magazine Australia.
Alistair can be contacted on:
02-66-52-1542 or via e-mail on alterry@tpg.com.au

2. Peter Sugden of Canberra also has a fully restored car (1976 model) with both hardtop and soft top for sale for around $25K. Peter can be contacted on 0439-491-564 (m) or 0262-824-673 (h)

If you look at www.thesamba.com and cl;ick on the Thing link then you will find a lot of stats and technical publications.

If you are in Sydney and want to ook at a couple of cars and talk to to owners (none of them for sale) then give me a call - Bill (0246-47-3781 or 0419-431-531).

A photo of my car is attached.

Good luck in your search as they are a pretty rare car in Australia.

Thats some great info thanks. Pity there so expensive. i didnt realise. Your car looks great. I'd prefer a right hand drive although i don't think i can afford to be picky 🙂.

Thanks again and ill look into it some more.

Rowan,
IMO, The Samba Thing Forum is the best place for info regarding 181's.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewforum.php?f=8
There are usually at least 80 181's for sale in the Samba Thing Classifieds at any given time.
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/cat.php?id=15
Thing Literature: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/lit/thing.php
Another decent Thing Forum, although not nearly as active or good as Samba is The Shoptalk Thing Forum:
http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewforum.php?f=32&sid=daf8686efc6c609ccb64c79735c9a2f8

As to RHD 181's, they are very rare (even in the UK). I've seen numbers of only possibly a couple of hundred being produced in the entire 181 production run.
Also I have read, there were only two known RHD's in Oz.
Vic from VicsBahn Autos ( http://www.vicsbahn.com/homePage.htm ) had one listed untill recently on his web site. It was an ex-NATO vehicle. Price was in the $15,000 US range ( 16,587 AUD )

A decent daily driver here in the US can be pruchased for between $6,000 - $9,000 US ( 6,633 - 9,949 AUD )

Hope this helps.

Steve
