Hi
They were never sold here, so most that you find will be private imports, possibly from the UK, so keep a look out for rust.
Steve
oh i didnt realise they never officially came to OZ
that makes things a little difficult i suppose.

Allot are imports or base golfs with Gti parts put on them. I know mine is a Mk1 GLS 5 door body, with late mk1 interior, but with the euro spec 8V FI 1.8L Gti motor..... But the body is very poor, but then a mate has a great 3 door body....... so many options.
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
Go hard or go home!!!!
That is a fake.
I love my Mk1
Havent had a chance to sell it yet as i have been so busy with life it will be sold very soon
🙁
what about mk1's in general?
what were the differences between a standard model and a GTI?

From memory they had lower suspension, the rear window had a matt black surround(even black GTIs). I believe (not 100% on this) they only came in two door. The roof lining was black also plus obviously they had GTI badges with the red line across the front grill. I don't think the very first ones had fuel injection and were 1600cc. The steering wheel was also different, it had the four button horn push as opposed to something similar to the late beetles. My dad had one that I used a fair bit and was great fun to drive went like sh*t from a shovel and the only thing that went wrong with it was the distributor wore out and cost him nearly 200 quid to get a new one and that was in '82. As for the very early golfs, again my dad had one when they came out,1100cc, but within a year it was falling apart with rust from the inside out. It went backwards and forwards to the dealer but it appears that the first ones used crap steel in their manufacture. You could slam the door and just hear the rust falling off! I can't speak for the ones imported to Oz, maybe the climate here may have suited them better.
Nick Vella at NV Mototorque in Rushcutters Bay had a GTI Cabriolet. I drove it once a few years back and I'm sure it was a Mk1.. Very desirable and (I imagine) very rare

Hi
You could always build your own GTi? Lots of parts are still around. The local MK1s came in local assembly and imported. The LS s are local assembly, some where a bit dodgy but if they are still around nowadays they would most likely be non-dodgy ones. The GLS is the imported model.
Try calling these people, they may have something.

What about the LS?

Hi
I meant LS.
yes mk2 GTI's were brought into australia, getting very hard to find a good one now. they dont perform like the mk1 GTI, but a very nice car.
dont buy an auto!!!
Yeah the Mk2 GTI's came to Australia but werent real GTI's as they came here only in 4 doors with the 8 valve 1.8. Overseas they were 2 doors and 4 doors and came with smoking 16 valve engine.
