My Mum pickd up her new golf today and drove out to pick up my daughter, lasted 92km, about 3km from her destination and she heard a loud bang and the car would not get out of 1st gear and dash lights were flashing everywhere.
She rang me and I thought she may have shoved into manual mode but she had stopped car, turned off, put into park then back into drive and it did the same four more times. She eventually got to her destination but was not prepared to drive back thus a tow truck was ordered. When it did arrive the towy had trouble as it would lock itself in reverse.
As you could imagine, she was very impressed with her first drive.😬

Oh dear. Those are not the type of stories that you like to read. You stand up for the marque, and then it just turns around and bites. It's the sort of thing where you really feel like saying, "just give me another one".
Modern VWs seem to have a very bad reputation for unreliability.

The new cars have a limp home mode in the auto models. If there was a problem with something, it can lock in just one gear (I thought it was 2nd) so you don't get stranded and can at least make a servo somewhere. Perhaps that is what happened? No idea what might cause it to do that in the first place though.
I remember buying a VN dunnydore wagon. When I drove it out of the showroom, it was locked in 2nd gear and I had to take it back to get the linkages fixed. Then on the way home, the speedo broke and I got a speeding fine to go along with it. After 3 months, we had about 50 different faults and after the front passenger door glass shattered one night for no reasaon, we got rid of it.
We have had a couple of issues with the new beetle cabrio, but all fixed easily with no dramas and I would rate them so far above the local cars it is not funny.

I've got a comfortline 2.0 tdi and think its the best thing ever. I would definitely hit up volkswagen assist for the tow. Only thing that has gone wrong with mine in 9000kms is that I blew an intercooler hose.
A Car should be able to go at least 150,000 kms without any problems...

Mum has now driven it again to pick up my daughter and it has broken down. Maybe this car should never be driven on Wednesdays??? After the first episode it was taken to Parramatta VW, dont know how well they looked at it but Mum goty it back and away she went. She has the explanation of the apparent fault written down but I have to read it so will advise when I do. Anyway it broke down again doing the same thing but this time closer to home so its been taken to Bill Buckle at Mona Vale where she bought it. Hopefully they will sought it out once and for all. How much confidence must my Mum have now in the new car? At what point can you say I just dont want it back?

I have an 07 Passat 2.0 TDI which has the same motor. It was only 6 months old when the radiator split and all the water came out. They don't make them like they use to.

Unfortunately we dont have lemon laws here... all you can do is take it back each time and get them to fix it.
There will be a point at which you can ask for a replacement and that would depend upon you and the circumstances of the faults etc.. but dont count on the dealership just giving you one after the second fault. If you have any probs with the dealership then report it to VW Australia directly. Keep records of the faults and what the outcomes were as you go.
A mate had a Falcon that broke down 2 k's from the dealership when he took delivery of it. Got it repaired and broke down again in the driveway. After 2 months of ownership it had been back to the dealer so often that he actually only had posession for 2 weeks. When he went to pick it up they had a new one for him. No probs with that one since.

I really question who much some of these people at the dealerships really know about the cars. It usually takes about three visits before they fix anything on my car.

shame to hear mate.. .. i know this dont help you however i picked up a new TDI manual about 3 months ago or so.. so far been to Adelaide via Melb and back, Tamworth a few times, ACT, etc.. 21,000 on the clock already and has not missed a beat.. however the 2001 polo we have is another story, had a few issues with that little chestnut...
however the 61 bus has been driven hard over the past 2 years, never missed a beat... get mum a splitty!!.. 😀
Hi
Its not limited to imported cars. I have company supplied BA Falcon ute with factory LPG, its done 60,000 ks now and has just had its 3rd diff, one every service.
I think VW lost the plot when they put motors in the front.
still a few of the old Golfs running from 76 when front engines were introduced.
we are talkin auto here and I just went back to a manual car.
Talk to vw australia or at least the Sydney distributor (if there is one) Nth Syd....
then consumer affairs
office of unfair trading maybe... its your mum ya gotta do it GT.

want any vw bits old but like me, Made in Germany!!!
Cannot complain at all for the service received from Bill Buckle. My Mum wrote a letter saying she was not confident, infact scared to drive the car anymore. Luckily the fault has happened in suburbs at low speed, what might happen if its at highway speeds? VW have taken it seriously as they should and her brand new car arrives next week. 🙂
Still not sure of exact problem, dont really care now.

I had a tv that was in for repairs for 6 weeks of its first 6 months of life. Eventually got a replacement (after making a loud scene in the shop while they were trying to sell another) that hasnt had a fault after 3 years.
I had a mitsubishi that went through 6 radiators in 12 months. My next one has gone 8 years with 200K+ and has only been serviced 3 times.
Good to hear that vw are listening to the customers. I wonder if they are going to double check everything in the replacement car or maybe include a few options for free.
Thats not rust, it's ah ... orange primer ... yep that's what it is ...
