I don't know about a meet, but I lived in the area from 1975 to 1996 and the best place to get your VW serviced was on the corner of Borella rd and East St in Albury. The guy there (I think his name was Paul Brown) was the best mechanic I have ever had on any car I have had serviced. He knew the cars so well that he would tell me that something was on the way out, but would only need to be replaced in 6 (IIRC) months. I got my Beetle a full service, and it was about $110 (in 1994 dollars). You could drop in at almost any time, and he would diagnose any issue and if he could he would have you fixed up and on your way in no time at all.
He knew how to fix my Dehne and when I arrived with my 57 he picked that the voltage regulator was wrong - it was too early (it was a round one). Most VW people wouldn't know a Dehne if they fell over one, and he knew how to work on them!
He also had a heap of early bits, I picked up some oval bits (I still have the NOS 36hp exhaust, but some %$#$%# stole my W deck) and he had some 25 hp bits - I thought it best to leave them for someone who had a 25hp motor. (Wasn't I community minded back then!, in hindsight I should have bought them all.)
The original mechanic was Willy Schmatica (I have no idea how to spell it) and he was an ex-factory mechanic. He would tell people to not let the motors lug up hills, and if you did he could tell when he serviced it.
I drove past a early last year and it looks like it was still operating, but I don't know if Paul would still be there.

Hi Ragerty,

Wodonga's a great town.

Not too far from Sydney, not too far from Melbourne. Coming from the UK, you may have to adjust your definition of "not too far" to Australian conventions.

Check out the "2008 Events" section of this forum for forthcoming events, such as the VW Nationals (Sydney) in May.
