I've got one of the three prong flasher relays on my beetle. I wired everything myself and this is the issue i have. The problem is that my blinkers don't flash. They light up and stay oon but no flash. My hazards work and flash but i believe that is a different relay anyways.

So left and right works, but no flash. Any comments on how the three prong relay should be wired up???

are the earth wires from the blinkers ok
also try using a portable light of same volt and disconect the blinker wires from relau earth the light and see if it blinks this will let you know if the earts are ok than do each light seperatly
the hazard are on a seperated line using the same relay
i use a wire with alagator clips on both ends it test earths etc
good luck

well my earths are ok i think, because the blinkers light up, but just don't flash. I'm using a early type coloum switch, power comes in, then switches through left or right as i switch accross.

I thought the hazard switch is its own relay??? I assume its a 69' or 70's addition with the hazard switch??? Not sure...But it blinks fine....

The direction also works correctly, so i switch to right and the right side front and back blinkers light up, but don't flash...

Thanks for your help Craig!

Its a after market blinker, one of the hotrod type of ones. My alternator/generator is 55amp bosch, but i have no engine in at the moment. Would that make a difference?
I've powered the blinker circuit only for the moment. Power comes through to my light swtich, which in turn comes through to my fuse box for my blinker circuit, then follows through to my blinker colum switch. Keep in my mind that they light up fine and blink when i pull the emergency switch. Can you confirm that the emergency switch is its own relay?? I believe it is???

The three rpong relays are not the standard ones for the 68 model im copying, so i used a later 71 wioring diagram for the blinker system becasue there were no hazards on the 68. Does my coloum need to be earthed??? Its dangling at the moment.

you need a bosch type relay to power 2 x 18W globes at a time

chuck the aftermarket one away

get the correct unit to power the globes fitted to your car
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

Hi Mick,
if the blinker lamps are going on...
and the emergency flasher unit works...
then that sender/relay is OK

it seems to Me that Your New flasher unit is faulty...
the flasher lamp in the speedo won't be on at all
with VW wiring...
it goes on when the fender lamps go off..

with standard type of flasher units - the speedo lamp will flash with the outside fender lamps..
You can use the 2 or 3 prong ones...

with the metal ones 21w x 2 [including the VW type]
when one blinker stops the remaining one will flash very quickly....

there are electronic ones - see thru...
that don't do this...
and if there is a short circuit - they burn up...

it depends on Your wiring...
VW made the wiring different for many countries...

USA are totally different to ours...

anyway best of Luck Mick

Spend another hour today trying to work it out. Maybe its my coloum switch. Is anyone using a oval type coloum switch, on 12volt, through a 3 pin flasher relay.

Anyone near by willing to show their wiring or anyone willing to take a photo or basic diagram of a oval/58 coloum switch blinker wiring...

I know its something simple, just can't get it. Some earth fault...iunno...car is unregistered, un-engineered and undriveable at the moment. Any more suggestions.

Some one must have done this!

you need to wire up relay like a 61 on model with o from fuse box,k to light in instrument cluster s to switch ,on the switch side the main wires go out to your lights ,the semaphore wiring isnt set up for a relay as they have 2 wires going to each semaphore which is one from the switch ad the other going to the dash light to complete the circuit ,this is all from looking at the 2 different wiring diagrams,if its any help

the relay wording is '31' '49a' and '49'(which is also + i think)

my coloum switch goes '54' , and the 'L' and 'R' go directly to the blinker terminal block which is the 12volts that go direct to the blinkers.

So the power is there, but the relay isn't running, just sending a standard 12volt...

connections are
31 earth
49 ignition
49a to 54 on indicator switch
you should try to hook up the flasher to a battery with a 18w globe to make sure the flasher is ok.

Mick058 wrote:the flasher works on the hazards, so it must be fine. 49 ignition is through the hazard switch??? or direct to fuse. I'd have to look to see how i'd connected it.
terminal 49 on the flasher goes to ignition supply from the fuse box

Are you still running the side blinkers on the pillars,They still have to have there own earth,If you have removed them what did you do with the wiring,I had the same problem with my 58 until we earthed out both the trafficators on the pillars cheers shane.

No the side pillars aren't connected, but they aren't wired into the system at all. I wired from scratch, so there not in at all. I was just gonna put them on a kill switch to put up at shows.

Terminal 49 on my flasher is going to ignition supply from fuse box.

Any other suggestions.

Does the coloum switch need special earthing?

so it goes....

RELAY:

49a to 54 on coloum switch
49 to igntion (fused)
31 to earth

COLOUM SWITCH:

54 to 49a on coloum switch
'L' to Left side blinkers on terminal block (bridged to take signal from emergency flasher also)
"R' to 'Right side blinkers on terminal block (" " ' " " " " " )

When i connected to the relay directly, removing the wires that came from the emergency switch, the same happened. Lite up but no flashing.

I don't have a dash light hooked up. Could this be the problem???

Is it a electronic flasher or old style bi-metal strip in a aluminium can?

hey mick
one of my bugs is a 1970 1500 and it had similar issues.....ie worked with hazards but not individual blinkers..one of my kids has just taken it to work so can't check the wiring for you right now but maybe tomorrow if it,s any help...but for what its worth..this is what i remember from that time
in frustration i took it to an auto electrician and he used a different can and/or relay to what had been supplied from one of the sponsors here....he said it was never going to work with the supplied one...i also had an electronic can which he didn't like either.
also at the time i had replaced the indicator lever/unit as it had cracked and fell to bits when i removed it to check for earthing possibility..the replacement was crap but is still in use....anyway something i found with the new indicator assembly was when moved to the left or right position something, i think part of the lever earthed live wire terminals against the bolt head/s that hold the ignition switch in...longwinded way of saying.......you may not have the right relay or can even if it is supposed to match....and if you have removed or replaced the indicator assembly check for anything earthing when you put the indicator on.(with steering wheel off)

so it goes....

RELAY:

49a to 54 on coloum switch - correct
49 to igntion (fused) - correct
31 to earth - correct

COLOUM SWITCH:

54 to 49a on coloum switch
'L' to Left side blinkers on terminal block (bridged to take signal from emergency flasher also)
"R' to 'Right side blinkers on terminal block (" " ' " " " " " )

I don't have a dash light hooked up. Could this be the problem??? - YES
Ok I have read your post and I would say the issue you have is with the lack of system load on the flasher. When the hazard switch is on you are using all 4 bulbs in your system and this is loading it enough to flash.

Simply add another bulb to 49a wire. So it goes 49A, bulb, indicator switch. This is the same place that the dash globe would go and will allow you to add the required load to the flasher.

the electronic flashers are designed so that if the load drops down the stop flashing. This is done so that if you blow an indicator bulb it stops flashing and you know you have blown a bulb. With the 2 terminal flasher units is use to slow right down.

Anyway add a dash light or change to larger indicator bulbs. For now though I would just dumby wire a glob to prove the point.

Also keep in mind that the electronic flasher units are not a good idea in old cars as they are very sensitive to system load and old VW do not have the best electrical systems or correct load for them. They are designed for modern cars with side indiactors, twin font bulbs, seperate dash lights etc etc. If you pull the specs on the one you have you will probably find it wants quite a lot of load compared to the 2 terminal units.
