64 Beetle.

When I first bought her she popped out of first when taking off about 1 out of ten times.

Seems to be increasing...

Is it new gear box time or ir there a quicker fix?

Thanks in advance for your never ending advice!!!

I would check the bushes at each end of the gear stick rod first , then check the gear stick itself is bolted in the correct adjustment spot. because if the adjustment is out you may not be fully engaging the gear .

car forums. where a lot of peoples good intentions end up taking a good old car off the road forever never ever to see the road again. 🥲

ADjust loosen the 2 bolts holding the stick in the floor than put the gear into 2 nd and tighten the bolta back up

I have an EMPI shifter?

Would that make any difference at all?

yes it decreases the throw so the gear may not be engaging properly

check the gearbox mounts, and bushes as per above before you go fora rebuild
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

Very rare for a box to jump out of first unless the mounts are allowing the engine to move back.

That being said...eventually wear can cause as you describe,
particularly if it was not engaging fully with your shifter, mounts, linkage adjustment etc as mentioned above.

If that is the original gearbox, 44 years aint bad service!
Could be time for a rebuild.
