Hi,
I have never heard of the swan badge on a VW..??

any chance of a photo of the badge..?

or describe the badge in detail..

chances are, Your car has done over the 100,000 miles..
which is common these days..

Also give Us Your engine number
and chassis number [situated under the rear seat]
just below the oval plate in the centre...

A bit of a pain to get to.. I know...

cheers

Hi
Yes the oil needs to be flushed out by taking out the sump plug, then all the six small nuts off the sump plate
and clean the strainer out..
take both paper gaskets off the sump plate and sump..

You will need a new oil change gasket kit which will give you 2 gaskets , 6 small copper washers and the larger copper ring for the drain plug..
these kits aren't expensive..

its probably best to take the hose off under the fuel tank
to drain all the old fuel out.. it won't be any good..
and replace the rubber hose..

You may need to clean out the carburetor if any old fuel was left in the carburetor.. as it turns into gunk.... yuk..

probably easier to replace all the fuel hoses and see if the carby works first.. You may be lucky...

You will also need to replace all the brake fluid out of the system as it won't be any good either..
You will need a few bottles of brake fluid and keep flushing until the brake fluid is clean...

Post as many pics as You can..

You should have an oil bath air cleaner unless someone has replaced it with an aftermarket filter..

What is your location??

Hi again.

Where are You located??

the kits are available at all VW aftermarket shops..
If I knew where you were I could tell You where to go to..

You will probably need points, distributor cap and rotor
spark plugs..

plus two tappet cover gaskets... again very inexpensive

You should get the oil change kit plus the two tappet cover gaskets for under $10-00

castrol GTX2 is recommended oil...
changed every 3000kms... [or miles]

cheers

Have a good look at all the electrics and make sure all of the electrical wires have good contact with thier respective appliance ie coil, generator regulator (under rear seat) etc and it pays to remove the earth strap from battery to chassis and make sure its got a good clean contact point.
The other day I was mucking around under the back seat routing a wire thru to the engine bay to fit a oil temp gauge and the main positive terminal broke off the regulator (the terminal gets hot and brittle).
Luckily the end of wire did not short out anywhere on the chassis as with all that horse hair seat packing nearby, a fire would of been imminent had I not noticed the problem.

Vw's need constant attention as you will find out but thats why most of us drive them 😎

Have fun and good choice of car btw. Instant street cred 🙂

There wasn't any badge originally on the front of the bonnet of late model beetles..

only on the 50s-60s models
1963 was the last model to have the Wolfsburg crest on the bonnet...
just above the bonnet handle..

there is a Volkswagen magazine out this month
called VWA , You should get a copy to check out the advertisers and the stories and photos...

cheers

Moss Green!! Again! There's five 71's in Canberra that are moss green excluding mine which came from Sierp Bros in SA in the first place🤪 .

Have fun with it and a good buff makes the colour a little more tolerable😂

Enjoy

The Swan emblem could be a badge relating to WA as that is its Coat of Arms. Packard cars also used a Swan as a bonnet ornament but don`t recall seeing it in emblem form. So now we all wait with bated breath for your curiosity to surface. As well as pics of your new found treasure. Happy motoring.

Do all of those things that have been suggested and

REPLACE ALL OF THE FUEL HOSES.

There is one under the fuel tank, one beside the gearbox, one into the fuel pump and one into the carburettor. New hoses of the correct type, metric size and new clips. A little plastic fuel filter on the hose into the carby is also a good idea.

DON'T ARGUE. DON'T PREVARICATE. DON'T SHILLY SHALLY ABOUT, DON'T PROCRASTINATE. DO IT. THAT'S AN ORDER!

Failure to do this could lead to an engine fire, which is a major cause of Beetle and Kombi losses. In fact replace them every two years regardless of their condition.

For flushing, the fuel tank is easily removed as it is held in by 4 bolts and clips.

With out being an old wus..........

These filters work under suction - NOT pressure.

So.....make sure it is before the pump.
Personally i have mine cable tie clamped to the body and hose clamped both sides sort of rear passenger wheel area after where the fuel line leaves the body and before the engine bay.

Having a fuel filter in the engine bay, this could lead to an engine fire, which is a major cause of Beetle and Kombi losses. I have seen cases where the fuel filter eventually pulls the pipe out of the fuel pump or carburetor..
and petrol sprays over a hot engine and exhaust..

these cars were burnt out....

best place for a fuel filter is under the LHS of the car where the pipe is joined with rubber hose..
or under the fuel tank..

From what i can see of the emblem on your bonnet it is most certainly from an early series Packard. Depending on where you register your car these days, the emblem may have to be removed as deemed a dangerous object in relation to persons being injured upon impact with. Notwithstanding, all the best with your new toy. cheers

Aaagh! Didn`t read all of your 'bonnet emblem pix' post. Plastic swan. Yuk. Still resembles one from Packard cars.

Bumpers...
You can get cheap Brazillian bumpers , but You will need to wax them every week to stop them rusting..

You can buy Genuine German made bumpers but they are very Expensive... [these have good chrome and are thicker steel...]

it may be cheaper to find an old german rusted or discoloured bumper and have them chromed..
Having things chromed is very expensive too..

probably the cheapest way at the moment is to use wet and dry paper to take the rust off
then paint the bumper with etch primer [spray can]
then paint it with spray can of auto paint..
best to buy both of these at Auto one etc..

I did one of My bumpers like that about a year ago, and although i didn't use it, it hasn't rusted..

You can buy stainless steel bumpers too, but again very expensive..

I've seen bumpers painted the color of the car or semi gloss black... You can get paint mixed in a spray can at auto one... if you wanted the color of your car...

and the Swan, is a dangerous object to pedestrians so wouldn't be allowed when your car is passed for a green slip... [depends on who passes it]

Seats come out easy..
but its probably best to get someone to show you..
its a bit hard to explain...
take the spring off from under the seat first...
hold the lever up, while someone pushes the seat from behind.. there is a flat locking piece that needs to be pushed down at the same time...
its on the outside of the seat base on each side..
and hard to see,,,

cheers

something I forgot...

You can get your brake master cylinder fitted with a stainless steel sleeve so it will never wear out...
and a repair kit fitted at the same time...

it did cost about $130 to have that done a few years ago.

I;m not sure who does that..
it would be a good brake and clutch shop

best of luck
