Thanks Brad, i had put a dumby bulb on and provided the theory. I tried a dash light (LED one) and it wasn't enough load, so i tried a tail light bulb and then it worked. Would a non LED dash light work? Can you still get them???

So you wouldn't recommend any after market relays? I currently am using the three pin setup. Does 2 pin have no earth???

You can use an LED but you will need to add a resistor to the circuit. A non LED Dash light with say a 5w bulb should be fine. Goto Supercheap and they will have dash lighs you can use, or just use a 2 terminal flasher.

Aftermarket relays or flashers ?
Although the flasher is a type of relay.

Correct 2 pin has no earth as it uses the earth load in the bulb circuit to activate the flasher internals.

if you use a 2 terminal flasher you can use the LED you have as the load needed will not be as much as that required by the 3 terminal flasher.

which means the dash light will flash with the outside blinkers...

VW ones do not... they take turns... lol

but I prefer the 3 prong ones...

[but not in My beetle] lol

The reason the dash light flashes out of sequence with the outside lights is that is flashes on the earth cycle of the flasher in a factory setup.

Your beetle is a 68 yeah ? so it would have come with a 3 terminal flasher.

mmm dunno what size resistor you would need I would have to work it out, do you know what size LED you have ?

I would just by a 2 terminal can and run the stock LED you have. Just pull the 31 earth wire out and off you go.

If the 2 terminal idea doesn't work, the other option would be one of the new flasher relay's you can get now that are intended ONLY for LED's... uses standard wiring the whole deal, and pretty sure you can get them both 2 and 3 prong.

I bought a 2 terminal relay which had on the packet '1-10 lights', so i assumed that it would work with any number. Other relays were labeled '4(6) lights'

This relay works perfectly, thanks for the advise lads!
