(1977 Kombi) 2l Engine oil leak, what part is this?

Our 77 Kombi came back from a (long) service with a significant (and new) oil leak - oil drips away steadily 24/7 🙁

The oil gathers and drips from the circled area in the pic.

What is the correct name for the circular cap/plug? What does it do, and how is it fitted/removed correctly?

Also, if the leak isn't related to that cap/plug but from somewhere above, any guesses as to where to start looking?

Any help greatly appreciated.

Looking at your picture, which is very good by the way. I would say they have forgotten to put in a new o-ring or they have pinched it when they put it in.

If it has just been serviced by a shop I would take it back to them and tell them to sort it as they would have taken the cover plate off when they drained your oil and should have fitted a new o-ring when they put it back on.

Judging by the oil pooling in the lip I would think that this is the cause and not something above like the oil presure switch or dizy o-ring.
