Hi
This epsiode the boys do a Botswana Special, they take a thousand mile safari across the spine of Africa in a normal two-wheel drive car bought for just 1500.
They buy a Mercedes 230E, Lancia Beta Coupe and an Opel Kadet and butcher and modify them to make it across the desert.
If they break down they will be forced to travel the rest of the way in a Beetle, doesn't sound to bad to me.
One of the things that spoil this show for me generally is the way that they deride VW Beetles, and not just in this episode, well all VW Beetle drivers have something to be smug about after this episode.
Steve
I think I can anticipate how this will turn out.
Three, smug, smart Alec, Pommy hack journalists, going DAKDAKDAK in a Beetle.

Its a pity that the episodes shown in Australia are so out of date, that this and other shows have been available for a while in the Best of Top Gear DVDs that are available to buy. I've seen them all.
But I wont spoil the ending for you.... 😂
yeah, its so old there are guys on a brit forum in the process of ressurecting that Kadett for another rally! will still be a great show though.
Reimagined/Recycled/Upcycled Cool
hope they break down so hey get the joy of dakkin along!!😂
Yay the bug won.... Yay
I knew it would. It was the only one to make it unmodified.
Series 10 - Episode 4
Monday 23 June at 7.30pm SBS TV
In the biggest episode yet the boys take a thousand mile safari across the spine of Africa in a normal two-wheel drive car bought for just £1500. With only a Mercedes 230E, Lancia Beta Coupe and an Opel Kadet to keep them company and safe amidst the choking dust, wild animals and a dreaded Volkswagen Beetle. Through the Kalahari Desert and across the Okavango Delta they trek across Botswana with the Namibian border the ultimate goal. Special Guest appearance by Stig's African cousin.

If a 1955 standard 36hp beetle can survive the 1955 Redex trial around oz then a 1960's beetle should survive Africa in a sinch. Buggered why they would choose an Italian car in the first place???
If you can't fix it with a hammer,
you have an electrical problem....
My wife pissed herself laughing the whole way through.

For entertainment value, those Lancia's are a fine looking car. The whole show was a complement to the Beetle and highly entertaining. They come across like id
😂iots but are a very talented, clever and funny people.
yep at the end even they said they would of been better off in the bug ...... but we already knew that . 👍
awesome episode, I nearly blew my stitches.

What from the "Operation"? What's it like to have to sit down to pee?
🤓 You going for the full job with implants, total removal of all dangly bits and bore out? It's refreshing to hear your doing this on such a puplic forum.
🙅
I don't think I've heard the term "bore out" in such a context before. Totally off topic, but piss funny.
Ain't nothin' like the wind in your hair.

As Clarkson said, Lancia has made some the best rally cars ever. Nothing could touch the Stratos and the Delta still has the record of 6 consecutive WRC manufacturers titles. I had a very similar Beta to Clarksons up until a year ago (except mine was manual) and there were some similarities I recognized on the show. Sometimes mine was also near impossible to start, for the same reason that Clarkson had trouble - the wiring in them is just woeful. Shorting the battery on Clarksons bonnet didn't help, but they did have the wrong battery installed.
With a sig of Volumex, I just have to be biased...

Gotta agree with the rally history but without a support crew crossing the desert like that in that car is just asking for trouble. Unless you happen to be Jeremy Clarkson which defies all logic and just wants something quick. I rather liked the Choice of the old 60's car as it is basic and simple to fix bush mechanic style. Or you could just save yourself the hassle and drive the beetle
🤓
Still a funny episode. Have to admit though that their trek across to New Orleans ranks among their best and funniest.

Finally Clarkson has had to eat crow and admit the superiority of the Beetle.
I hope he now stops slinging off at them and that he also stops calling all rear engined models of Porsches, Volkswagen Beetles.

You need to grow a sense of humour
🥲
Hi
We all know that some of the teams opinions are crap, look at how they rave about Euro cars that in this market are known shit boxes, like Ford tragics (transit vans), so I take what they say about VWs as not really true.
I remember seeing an old episode where Jeremy destroyed an old 911, stupidity of the highest degree.
Steve
This episode has been on U tube for a while. I think it is still there, in 3 parts.

Defies objectivity sometimes.
