So, I'm ramping up to full scale clarendon assault.

So I have my index.html web page, with the menu up top as web pages tend to do.

I dont want to have to cut and paste that menu section into every page, and then have to update every page when I change one of them. So without using frames (cos the only 2 things I learnt at uni was that lectures are longer after 3 schooners and frames suck) how do I do it once and include it on each page?

well in PHP you cad do an include where you call in an external file, don't think you can do that with plain old html...you'll need a scripting language...although saying that you can call in javascript files...and style sheets.

been a while sorry

Hi Chris

Nothing wrong with using frames, as long as you don't use frames for the sake of using frames. Whats program are you using?

I'm using a template from oswd.org (which uses css) and editing with frontpage, mostly using the gui but sometimes you just have to use the editor.

Perhaps I'm a tosser and need to get over it, but.... like this http://users.tpg.com.au/berzerk/Chris/clarendon/

You can use Server Side Includes (.shtml) if your server is configured for it.

As 555bug said, you can use PHP; similarly, any of the other server-pre-processed type languages, like .ASP, .JSP etc., depending on your server setup.

You can serve the whole website up as a CGI-response, then use your favourite language (Perl, C++, Python, endless list goes here) to inject HTML fragments at appropriate points.

You can write a pre-pre-processor to pre-pre-process your web pages before you upload them to the server, to include your menu section.

You seem to like Microsoft products, so you could learn .NET and C#, and you will be wiser at the end of the process and Bill will be better off.

You can use frames, but then you only learned one thing at uni, not two.

There are other ways to do it, but they involve monkeys.

Hi Chris

If your using Frontpage you should be able to make a table with a link to all your pages and just copy and paste that table into every page and just remove the irrelevant links.

I used to use Frontpage but I'm learning to use Dreamweaver now, somethings in Dreamweaver are brilliant others are just plane stupid.

you all want to make it as hard as possible. Just make a template in Frontpage and off you go, nothing hard about it, it is even a GUI function so you don't need any code. Even better if you use Dreamweaver as it is even easier ....

Exactly what I was going to say.

We run a small web design business, and we always use CSS for the basics (font type, size, colour, telling browsers what to do as quickly as possible so that your page doesn't take forever to download, embedding images), and always, always, always create a template, and then create new pages from that template. that way, all of your pages are consistent and load quickly.

If you can get your hands on a copy of Dreamweaver (I find Frontpage is just too basic), you'll be up and away. My husband hates Dreamweaver with a passion so he handcodes everything, but I like it cos it's easy - just point and click most things.

Best of luck. If you need any more help, PM me.

yeah agreed if you dont know much about html try get your hands on dreamweaver, you either use the design page which you just design it how you like similar to frontpage and it will write the code for you or you can do both, having the code edit page to edit your code to add or modify your pages..

i hate frontpage but found dreamweaver much better.. or you can just use wordpad and write them yourself.. =)

Yeah creating a template file is OK to begin with. But once my 8 pages are up online and I want to make a change to the header I would have to make the change to all 8 pages.

With luck I can use the include and all will be sweet. Cant test it out at work though because ftp is blocked.

mmm not ..

If you use a template there is one occurence of it on the server and the html pages invoke the template when they are called. Therefore if you change the template then all the pages chance as well.

Think of it as a graphical include.

oooh ok. I can see clearly now. so in frontpage you save it as a .htt file yeah?

I just tried the non-graphical include and it works.

I appreciate everyone's help. At uni I used to go to geek forums but you get much better responses from vw geeks.

Will buy you all a beer at valla... ooh thats right I cant go.
