Don't panic mate as you will soon find these little bueties are a steep learning curve that we will all help you through but as said above reverse gear is selected at the shifter to the left and back beside second gear which you will also need to depress the lever.
Now with that little dilema all over how about you tell us all about your car and yourself and what you do and hopefully the team here will steer you in the right direction to happy motoring VW style.

thanks again,
as for me and the new addition to the family, from what i have been told so far our little bug is a 65-66 model with a 1300 engine,it looks as though it's original colour was some sort of cream, but it has been rather hasterly and roghly covered with a purple that has now turned pinkish,i can't really complain as i picked it up for a mere $400,florr pan is al intact and only appears to have a small amount of rust on both lh and rh bottom door hinge panels which i hope won't be to hard to repair? all trim inside and seats are in mint condition and seats appear to be have fairly recently been re covered and re foamed.motor has a few oil leaks but so do i at 39 years plus old.i purchased the bug for a project for my son and i to do together and for it to be his first car when he turns 16 (still 9 years away so dad will get to play with it for a while first).
we want to do a complete herbie replica (as close as possible anyway).
as for me i have been in the auto industry (spare parts) since 1982 until current.10 years at ford then 12 years at holden and then back to ford.hence my problem with reverse i have never delt with a car with reverse there before, but like you said a steep learing curve is starting.
born in townsville in nth qld and still here, married to a beautiful wife for nearly nine years and 2 children aged 8 and 18 months.
thats about it,thanks again and any advice more then gratefully accepted.

Guilty!

First day I had my first VW the neighbour had to show me where reverse was.

Then when I bought the T3, 1st & reverse were opposite. That took some getting used to as well.
Well my friends are gone & my hair is grey, I ache in the places where I used to play.

Yet another Townsvillian getting into VW's great to see. Will have to organise a meet one day as I know of others who would be interested in meeting fellow VW drivers. All the best with the project.

OK, well I've never had trouble finding reverse in a Volksy since the old man had been telling me as long as I can remember... but the thing that's always had me stumped is the number of (stupid) movies where people accidentally put a Volksy into reverse and try to drive off... I mean, what the !?!?!?

I have got into the bad habit of holding the button in on my Berg shifter as I hit 2nd down from 3rd..............what gear do you reckon I get? I know where reverse is. 🤓 I think Ive been doing this as I have been driving an auto for 2 months and kept clicking the button in as I was driving getting bored.

reverse never worried me too much, it was the fact that the release for the boot on a type3 notch was inside the passenger side door opening that really got me! took an hour or more before a mate came around and found it for me 😂

When I first got my Beetle my brother was taking it for a spin and found reverse when down shifting to second. Rather it made it crunched a lot as I don't think it'll let you go to reverse when moving forward at speed.

My other brother turned on the wipers when driving my golf when I first got it rather than indicating left.

And just to confuse matters, reverse in the golf is were 1st is, all the more confusing when I went to move my beetle after not driving it for a couple of years.

Why not fit a Quick Shifter? About $85 for the base model. But don`t forget to also buy the neoprene insert that fits at the beginning of the gear stick shaft ( inside the tunnel) and the Locater bracket found at the other end. Pop your back seat out, there`s a metal plate with one self tapper screw holding it in place. remove the plate and you`ll see the locater. There`s a little bit of work involved but if you`re nearby to one of us, i`m sure you`ll be able to be given a hand. cheers, good luck & welcome to the wonderful world of wee dubs.

grave diggin he is.....guess we better organise that run. Once Bent's settled we had better put up a post and I'll call the list of name in my book again. Bit of luck and there will be a big turn out. A few people have suggested a sausage sizzle at the end of Pallaranda.
