night before last i went down the the shops (about 2ks from home) started car, drove down fine.

when i came back out turned key, oil and genny lights come on but turn it to start and they go out and nothing happens.

thought it might be the switch so i tried hotwiring it, nothing.

its also important to note that after a few goes trying the starter either hotwiring or usng the key, the power for ignition seemed to dissapear and i would lose genny and oil lights, and then power would return after a random short period.

so i thought bad wiring, bit damp from the rain.

checked coil wiring etc all good, battery terminals all good, earth strap all good, wire from battery to starter all good.

still nothing.

my mate drives down and we try to roll start it when there is power to ignition, it roll starts no problem only now the accellerator is jamming and its revving up by itself. so i disconnect the acc. cable and set it to a fast idle on the idler cam androll start it again with the intention of idling home.

get to the set of lights at the end of the shopping carpark before power dissapears again.

anyway got it towed back yesterday andtried bashing the $#!^ out of the starter motor thinking it was the solinoid, and that appeared to work as it turned over and started the car. (havent since got it to turn over). so it looks like its a faulty starter.

but theres still the issue of the acc. cable.

it doesnt appear to be jamming at the engine end, nor in the tunnel itself. the arm that the loop attaches to seems to be working fine and the shaft, although worn has a satisfactory action.

but when u try to depress the pedal it catches and jamms all over the place. the 60's pedal attaches via and bolt to the floor which acts as a hinge and then a kind of s shaped peice of steel which moves the shaft as you depress the pedal. this s shaped peice seems to be jamming and is very worn.

but after undoing the nut on the floor bolt i cant get the bolt out, even after much WD40 it still wont budge so i cant get the pedal out to have a look at it.

ok my main questions in all that are.

1)why do the lights go out when ive tried starting it a few times?

2)what are my options with the starter? does everyone agree its the starter?

3) what the hell can i do about the ACC. pedal?

oh and im broke atm and its my only transport!

the last 6 months the baja has been playing up so much its driving me crazy!!

any help would be very appriciated.

try cleaning all the terminals on the fuse box?sounds like something is corroded. If you think the s bend on the accelerator is the problem grease it up and everything else too for that matter, sounds like a frayed cable to me though, is it wire or the new style?

Shaft of accelerator goes through tunnel & out the other side. Take cover off on passenger side of tunnel & see if the small retainer is on the end of the shaft. (either a very small circlip or e clip) If its missing then the whole rod can move sideways & jam. Sometimes even if the clip is present there might be some sideways slop from wear, you can use a thin washer on the shaft to remove slop.

Regards,

Matt.

ok ive fixed the pedal.

the actual pedal and twisted and therefore wasnt pivoting at the same angle as the shaft. god knows how that happend but i bent i back and now its fine (for now)

still having electrical problems though

just got under the car and had a good look at the starter, the big power lead coming from the battery is fine and the power lead coming from the starter to the regulator is fine (new wiring)

but when i put direct power to the other terminal on the starter to hardwire the starter motor there is still nothing.

when there is power on give the solenoid a tap and see if it frees up

I would have your battery tested or borrow a battery put it in and if all is good you know what the trouble is.

If a battery has dropped a cell it will power the dash lights but when you turn the key to start nothing no light no nothing.

yeah i checked that marc, we took the battery out of the camry and put it into the bug and nothing. put the bug battery into the camry and it started fine.

just went out again to have a look and it started fine.

turned it off and then tried again, no worries again

so it looks like it is the solinoid.

maybe got seized in the wet?

it might be worth sealing the gap around the end cap to stop the ingress of water or moisture into the solenoid, once its dried out a bit👍

Nick,
Just pull the starter off and strip it down as it could be the brushes sticking or worn. It'll only take you a few minutes to remove it (if you remove the drivers side wheel it's a lot easier), The solenoid's held on by two screws but the starter motor itself is basically just an electric motor, mind you they really pi*s me off when they don't work. I've recently been having fun and games with the buggy's starter and ended up buying another one and then found out the problem was with the the ignition wiring. BTW I now have lots of bits of starter motors at my place🤪 Including solenoids of various shapes and sizes.

Hit it! 😂

Seriously - i had a dicky starter for a while. Couldnt be bothered changing it.
Jot a long steel rod and you can line up through the wheel arch and give it a good tap

Should be enough to free it up.

Do this while you consider options on replacing either just the solenoid or the whole starter

its ok barry it looks like it is the 6mm power lead earthing out somewhere. (but i did hit it ha ha, pretty hard)

when i disconnect the terminal and short it solidly with a screwdriver (used to dodgy bit of wire before) it turns over

so im off to put a new power wire in now, fingers crossed.

No, James still lives at home and as a matter of fact I believe he's knocked Uni on the head now as he's finding it too hard. He's just arrived home from Brisbane where he's been at a dyno day and he got 148.5kw from his Legnum so he's happy. I can't help him though if anything goes wrong with it🙅

oh he bought a legnum? i remember him telling me about wanting one l;ast time i was down there, theres a few floating around the coast cant say they do much for me. if he ever wants any work done on it tell him to look up Marty at MW performance, cant rate him highly enough as a ricer mechanic and engine builder.
