Hi. I've got a 1641cc engine in my Beetle. It acts a bit funny when starting cold - from 1st i switch to 2nd gear and the engine loses power - feels like the power has been sucked into a vaccum.

After a long drive - I switch off the key - but it takes 30 seconds or so for the engine to shut down. It keeps on spluttering.

Anyone know what could be the problem?

Thirding the timing. being out. Question is what caused it?

ill bet a 009 and a mechanic who doesnt know how to time one

that pre ignitioning when u turn ur key off is ur engine trying to rattle itself to pieces
u need to get it sorted soon or ur pistons will have holes in them

If I'd had the foresight I could've taken a pic of a head that was exposed to that condition. It's a little hard to explain, but the surface of the deck (is that the flat bit around the chamber?) bore a strange visual resemblance to what chocolate mousse would look like if it were made of aluminium. Oh yeah, that head cracked too during that time. I had the crack repaired recently and put it in the motor. Beats the alternative though.
