Hey Guys, Im back and trying to get back into my cars again...

I took a break from mostly everything so I couuld concentrate on having a little monkey arrive, she is now 7 months old.

Anyway...

Im wanting to start work on Doodle again, my 69 Squareback auto.

First things first, engine service and brake service.

What Im after from you chaps is a list of the tools I will need for both jobs, and any step-by-step stuff you have on type 3 engine and brake services.
I have a few manuals around the place, but they dont really tell me where I should start and what order to carry on in.

Doodle runs, but very roughly. She hasnt been driven in anger for over maybe 20 years now, so I want to do everything right, and do it myself.
the work ive done so far is documented here

Needs an update or two, should be coming soon.

Thanks in advance chaps.

Rare 1969 type 3 Automatic Variant

would have been fully imported...
only 69 type 3 auto I know about

Find out what dizzy is fitted and buy new points, condenser, rotor, distributor cap, spark plugs

and i would replace the spark plug leads
it gets very hot in the engine compartment in type 3

I would use wire spark plug leads as the others break down - [well, they used to on Me back in the 70s..]
and make sure it has the resistor plugs on the ends of the spark plug wires. plus the rubber air seals...

Mick Motors would probably have all that stuff...
and We are not looking at a lot of money, compared to new cars...

all those things used to be replaced at major services
back in the 50s 60s and 70s...

cheers

Thanks Lee! Yeah, I've been told before there aren't may of these around.

Mick's is on top of my list of places to visit.

I need to get some better tools as well, trying to find a good list to get cracking on.

Cheers!

Basic hand tools:
Socket set
Spanner set
screw drivers
tune up stuff (timing light, carb sych if twin carb)
Do the brakes first, there's no point making it go if you cann't stop.

Bake service:
As a minimum
Replace all brake hoses (can be bought or have them made up at most brake specialists) for ~$35 ea it's cheap insurance as brake hoses age regardless of use. Don't forget the blue hoses betwen the brake fluid reservoir and the master cylinder.
Have drums/disc rotors machined
New brake shoes/pads (if worn)
New hand brake cables
Adjust rear brakes and hand brake.
Drain and replace brake fluid. bleed brakes.
If you have the money or it is necessary
New master cylinder
New wheel cylinders
Check calipers and have sleeved if worn or pitted.
If the car hasn't been driven for 20 years, there's a good chance the brake system has corrosion issues due to moisture build up. Check all cylinders for pitting and replace as necessary.

Engine:
Replace fuel hoses. This is a must do. Remember, no fuel filter between pump and carb(s)
Replace spark plugs.
As Lee said, replace ignition leads, boots and the plug on the ends. Complete sets are quite cheap. New points, dissy cap, rotor
Check out the carb(s). Put a kit in and have them rebushed if necessary.
Change engine oil.
Change air filter oil.
Change tranny fluid.
Check all electrical wiring for loose terminals and perished or cracked insulation.
Set valve clearances
Change genny belt and set tension.
Set dwell
Set timing
Balance carbs (not sure if 69 had twin or single)

Muir's "How to Keep our Volkswagen alive" has a good list of tools for each task.

Cool, checked out the dizzy and carbs.

Dizzy is a, well, the numbers on it are:
231 137 037
211 905 203P

I can find plenty of references for the 036, but not the 037, odd. any help appreciated there.
Useful page, gives you the other part numbers you need:
http://home.comcast.net/~marcsoutlet/site/?/page/Bosch_ignition_parts/
Again, the 037 is not listed.

Worth upgrading to a 009??

Carbs are Solex 32 PDSIT-2 (left) & 32 PDSIT-3 (right) (Hope thats correct too)

Cheers

Upgrade to 009!! No f#$king way. They are not an upgrde for twin carb type 3's, they are a downgrade. Stick with the stock vac advance one. Just check that the vac can is working and give it a clean up.

Carbs are correct.

Cool, thanks mate, just as always a lot of talk about the 009's.

Worth considering electronic ignition at all?
Twin air filters?
FI conversion?

then again, if its a fairly rare car then maybe I should keep it original.

Im basically wanting to do everything I can to get this engine reliable and performing the best it can. Suggestions on a postcard pls. 🙂

Hey Purple, Would you bother doing the wheel bearings as well while you were doing everything else? Im talking about doing all four wheel bearings.

Why not? Bearings cost about $5 each so while you've got it all apart you may as well do them.

Indeed, they are already on my list. Cheers!

Anything else you can think of I should look at, I really havent driven the car to know of any issues, but if it hasnt been driven in over 15 years, then I expect there is more to do.

Cheers for the help so far guys.

Can't find those numbers, 211 could indicate a kombi dissy?? Late kombi's (Type 4 motor) have a 021 905 205P part number.
You should have either a 311 905 205F or a 311 905 205T
The kombi dissy (above) is not too different to a late type 3 dissy in advance curve, only the kombi gets a little more total advance.
Hope that helps. Oh, the '69 motor is basically the same as later type 3's, only had minor changes up to '73.

Other things? As Purple mentioned DO THE BRAKES and sort the GB oil.
'69 auto's were not that rare, just many have rusted away 🙂
I have/had a '69 auto fasty (been stripped now, way too much rust in it).

I ran a kombi dissy in my auto fast back for a year or so. The extra advance does give it a little more pickup, but I was concerned if it was good for the motor though.
