Howdy all,

Just pulled the case apart and from the books this looks like it needs a reconditioned case.

But when talking to another VW guy he recons if i get really fine wet/dry i can just sand it flat. I got another pic of it cleaned off if thats any use.

Any ideas people?

its very hard to tell from the pics you show

Its needs to be cleaned spotlessly get all the backed on BLACK oil off and then clean the face surfaces

bolt the case halfs back together and check the gaps

I would take it to a shop after its clean that does do engine overhauls and seek there advice from the looks of the oil bulid up it would appear to have been together fora long time so a freshen up may be in order

do the bearing saddles have any ridges on them or can you see movenment marks on the split faces
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

if you can't sand the bearing saddles flush, get them reground by a engine rebuilder and fit oversized bearings in....
