i decided to tint my bugs windows today
mainly cos noone around here will do it cos the tint i wanted is illeagle and ive done everything else to it bar the paint so why not worst that can happen is i waste $30 of tint
a few ppl up the coast will do it if u "bought the car like that" but i havent got time atm thro the week to head up there
ive got all the side windows done no probs
but that bloody back window yeesh......🤪
mid 70s beetle back windows are the biggest of the lot and would have to be the worst shape ever for tinting.
they not only curve from side to side but also from the top to the bottom
the old method seemed to be do it in 3 or 4 strips which looks shitfull once the tint ages and shrinks leaving the joints visible
so i thought maybe heat it up with a hair drier?
or is there a better method??
ive got an old hot vws mag where they used spray on for the outter 3 or so inches and the rest done normally but looked pretty ordianary i thought
i got enough left for a few attempts
im thinking it may need a professional 😂
The only way to do it was in several strips and the more the merrier. I did it years ago and it didn't look too bad. I've even done it with a spray tint out of a tin and the first time it went brilliantly and stayed on for years but when I decided I wanted a blue tint instead of green the second time it went sh*t!!
cheers Barry
so whats the best way to tackle it?
cut strips off the tint then lay them individually
or do a bit of overlapping and remove the excess
its my first tint job so its abit of a learning curve for me
with the new styles of tints u can use a single sheet and heat it so it srinks to the shape, i have had all my windows done by a local lot and thats how they do the rears. i am having the windows done on my latest by a different mob but they say they do it with single and heat to so fingers crossed by wensday arvo i will know for sure

When I did it I used a fair amount of strips and as they were thin and I had loads of time they hardly overlapped at all and creasing wasn't a problem. It was a case of keeping everything soaked with plenty of soapy water so you could slide it without sticking. I used a spray bottle for this and it was in England so evaporation wasn't too much of a problem😉 I had the window removed from the car so the outside edges weren't a problem, just make sure everything is totally dry before refitting the glass. Whether the modern stuff is easier to use I wouldn't know just keep an eye on Steff and see how his glass comes out.
Take the glass out of the car and take it to a tinter and tell them it is for an offroad car, or for 'art deco coffeetable and artwork uses' and they should have no problem tinting it.
I did My beetle OK but I didn't even attempt the rear window
as Joel says its a concave window
so probably the worst to do...
It cost Me $100 to have Mine done...
Good job.. but overpriced I think..
and that was 3 years ago...
its just the one sheet of tint...
and they use a metal tint these days..
and would have to heat it up...
doing it while the rear window was in the car...
PRICELESS
Best of luck
LEE
PS: many tinters these days seem mainly use the one color...

im gonna pop the window out next weekend and have a go with the hair drier see what kind of disaster i can create
if it fails tho im just gonna do like helbus said
im planning on doing my windows before i put them back in. it sounds harder than i thought now.
this was my first stab at it
i thought it all seemed abit daunting to
but u can good quality metalised tint cheap now
i figured $30 its worth a try
side windows were a piece of piss cos there all flat
i took the door glass and smokers windows out to do them
cleaniness is the big key
i was a bit slack when i was cleaning them up i noticed a few cat hairs in the mix just for good measure
Got mine back today from the tinters and they did it the same as the others, one whole sheet shrunk to follow the shape of the rear window. looks great very happy. They would have charged me $250 ( very good price)for the whole car but i did some paintwork for them so did a deal 🤘
I'll take apic in the next couple of days and see if it shows how good it looks.
