Is there a special bent tool to remove the (very strong) tappet cover retaining springs on 2-litre Kombis?

My old heads and springs were tired, and could easily be removed and replaced with a largish screwdriver. It was tricker than a Beetle as the heater boxes are bigger and get in the way, but not impossible.

However the new engine, with new heads and covers, has VERY strong springs. I did manage to get them off and on for tappet adjustment (with a big screwdriver and some swearing), but it is easy to get it wrong and a less than perfect fit results in an oil leak.

I'm told there's a VW tool that is like a curved screwdriver. What does it look like, so I can make one?

I use a brake adjusting tool which can be bought cheap from Supercheap or Autobarn. It is basically a bent screwdriver.

Hi

I've used 1/2 of a pair of old multi grips, it lifts the clip, but also pushes down on the cover at the same time. So is it running or what?

Yes all finished, took a lot longer than I thought it would. Had battery, then carb problems, but sorted now.

Half multigrips is good idea, will see if I have an old set somewhere. Leigh suggested making a tool out of a bent 8mm case stud, with a wooden file handle on one end - another good idea. I'll do the tappets again in another 1000 km so I'll also browse Supercheap next week...

I have a 12" pinch bar that I use sometimes. Although when I just couldn't be bothered or I can't find anything suitable I grab the middle of the wire, and yank out and down. Not recommended. Doesn't always work and can result in skinned knuckles.
