My T4 DTM Stage 1 was like $820AUD landed and I paid no duty, took 3 days to get here. The dollar was at like $0.95 though.

ur not gonna notice immediate dramas
its the lifespan of the engine thats effected
due to the design they over cool 1&3 and under cool 2&4

all the shrouds built for vw conversions dont have the elaborate vanes inside that porsche shrouds do

jake raby has done extensive testing on all the shrouds out there
porsche shroud was toward the bottom of the list

Have you ever actually had one / used one / tested one ? Or are you just talking from what you have read of others who sell a different product ?

I have run then on my own engine in a buggy with twin Cylinder temp guages on 3 and 4 with an 11 Blade and there where no issues at all. Engine has type 4 oil cooler fitted and was full flowed with only a filter no external cooler as such (apart from type 4)

If they didn't over cool in a buggy with an 11 blade and there was no real difference between 3 and 4 then I would suggest that everything you read is not spot on. I know Jake has done a lot of testing and everyone finds their own things but unless you have run one yourself then I can't see how you can comment apart from quoting those who have actually tested them.

I know Mike Sharp has been running a porsche style shroud on his buggy for many years and I reckon it has done a great deal more work than 95% of VW out there, without issue.

Dave at Custom Vee Dub has just fitted a Bernie Bergman kit to hit big type one with dry sump kit, m400 motec and a few other nice parts, once again no issues yet.

Anyway I could go on but I think you get the point. There are a lot of peopel out there quoting out their ass who have not actually ever used / had one and thought you may like some feedback from an actual user.

That being said my EJ22 cools just fine and I would never go back to VW Aircooled power so maybe that nullifies my opinion.

i think "all the shrouds" is a tad of an overgeneralisation. the porsche shroud i took off my type 4 had flow directional veins inside off the back of the alternator. possibly a fat performance shroud - no idea how long they have been doing the fan conversions for? at a guess +30yrs - alot of which has been development for offroad dessert racing motors.... irrespective - whilst shrouds specifically marketed and sold for vw conversions like the bergmann etc may not have such veins i think the addition of such veins is most definately a possibility - one of which may potentially resolve any cooling bias issues (should they actually exist).... nothing against jake raby or the dtm both of which i think are fantastic additions to the global vw community but i think its fair that both sides of a story be supported and discussed. kudos for the "research and development" and fantastic marketing scheme. however you don't see too many of the boys racing in europe with their big type 1 and 4 motors running dtms. nor do you see them marketing porsche shrouds with research and development etc or alternatively complaining of engine failure or decreased engine longevity as a result of over/under cooling - i think in such cases their actions speak louder.

i've always been very much into the whole science, research base and establishing proof/fact and in turn i'm personally torn over trying a dtm. in the same stance though - there is nothing more horn than a carbon fibre porsche shroud from sharbuilt...........

Well said Nick, Jake is a master @ marketing although all praise must go to the late Joe Loccicero - Oregon Performance, who originally developed the brilliant DTM by trying to improve on the 50 years of VW research and development. Kudos also go to Mike Sharp, I have personally used his product in both T4 & T1 format, quality of workmanship is second to none and without cooling problems.
My 20 cents, if you are building a motor that requires air volumes and cooling of the DTM you better not be cutting any corners elsewhere in the build, re: cheap crank and rods, P/C's, heads, etc, etc. Build it once , build it right.

Quality and cost is what made me get my DTM, over $2500 for a Sharpbuilt 911 kit or $800 for a DTM, thats tested and improved and bolts straight on and utilizes vw parts (alternator, fan). That leaves more money for better engine parts. The only 911 kit that has directional vanes in the shroud is made by either Gerd Tafel or Reichart Tuning in Germany.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

Hey eraser, not a can of worms mate we are just speaking from experience, all systems do work and have worked for years, some do a better job than others - "DTM", some look shit hot - "Porsche", some are reliable and cheap - "VW OG".
In the end it depends on the application of your engine and the look you are going for.
Good luck with the build.

my ex had a superbug with one on a 2L type4
#2 and 4 ex valves were always tightening up on a not to old engine
plus it was always running hot even with a remote cooler and 5 blade fan
i took the fan off to make sure it hadnt sucked in anything that was blocking the fins and i noticed then that it had no vanes inside at all
in the end we pulled the heads off which showed evidence of over heating
engine was only 12,000kms old with newly reco;d heads and had only had that cooling system on since it was built

i couldnt tell u what breed it was tho but i think it may have been an early sharpbuilt one

OG 911 fanhousings dont have any vanes, except a scroll type of fin arrangement that is screwed to the back of the alternator. I've used Mike Sharps kit on a type IV with an eleven blade Porsche fan that ran hard for 10 years + with zero cooling issues.

Theres more to it than one is good and the other is not. So many other variables, engine specs, tune, components, oils, maintenance .......
