As far as im aware i need to replace the gaskets in my 76 kombi engine to stop the oil leak in the new bug my partner and i bought. Just wondering how hard it is as iv never done it befor. (need to for rwc)

I have my trusty idiots guide to vw's and am keen to learn about this stuff so if anybody knows any tips they would be appreciated!

Thanks El

Head gaskets?....... I think you mean tappet cover gaskets.

Get the good cork ones from the VW shop, and then normally (well on the beetle) jsut flip the heavy wire bale up, remove tappet cover, place new seal in, replace and make sure all is sitting well and pull bale bakc down........
I have no sympathy for my car, only the wallet that pays for it!
Go hard or go home!!!!

😂 Your sure its even a VW engine?
Should be just the same as BiX said still as it is the same engine still.

hmm well i had a look lastnight with a freind who knows a bit about engines and the tappet cover gaskets are all fine. he thought it may be the next gasket/seal in but i am told you have to pull half hte engine apart to get to it is that right???

Well the only other seal I can think of is the pushrod tube seals and yes, the heads have to come off to change them.

It is "unusual" but not impossible to have a Type 3 motor in a 1976 Kombi - though in 30 years of dubbing i have never seen one

76 kombis came a type 4 motor.
I have seen upright type 1 motors in there

Whatever - if it is a type 3 (which is a type 1 motor with pancake cooling) motor then yes, to do properly, the heads need to come off to replace push rod tube seals.

If it is only one or 2 tubes you can get screw adjustable (or spring but i dont like them) push rod tubes and do it with the motor inthe car.
Head stays on but rocker gear needs to come off

If its NOT a bad leak

have the engine steam cleaned or pressure cleaned so the engine looks in good clean condition..

push rod tube seals can go hard and crack and leak
if permatex gasket cement is used on both sides of the seals they should seal fine...
and you need to stretch the push rod tubes slightly before replacing them... [engine out]

as mentioned above - You can take a push rod tube off by crushing it up and pulling it down..
after taking the rocker gear and the push rod out=

then insert a spring loaded push rod tube with new seals
place it in position then reassemble... easy... sort of...

a lot easier than taking the engine out...

cheers

by what she is saying its a type 3 motor in a baja, so take off the cage and the motor is easily accessable, then its easy as pie to change them without taking the motor out🥲
