My tank sender is not reading accurately yes I know common on a v-dub. I read some time ago on this forum about a guy descibing how to measure the depth of the tank and then setting up the sender accordingly.
Also would a new sender give a accurate reading.

Hi Trevor,
I've never had any problems with fuel gauges reading incorrectly
but its usually the sender that fails...
pull it out and check if the wire is broken
where the part that moves is...
they do eventually wear out...

the gauges are usually OK...

cheers

Lee

You can check the fuel gauge by connecting the two wires on the sender unit together and turn on the ignition to acc. If the gauge goes all the way up the gauge itself is fine.

Check the floats inside the tank. If the floats have holes in them and are full of fuel your going to get a incorrect reading.

Check that the float and float arms are not getting jammed up inside the tank. This will happen if the unit is installed in the incorrect position and the floats are not free to move.

How is the gauge reading atm?
