I was just wondering what people's advice / recommendations would be as I want to upgrade from my stock exhaust.
Engine is stock 1600cc pushing a 72' bus. I want to chase a few more horses (know I won't get alot),and also looking for a deeper note, something that sounds nice.
if u have the ground clearnce availble u cant beat a good ol quiet pack
i got a thunderbird one and love it
its got a nice deep note, quiet under normal driver but a bit of bark if u hit the go pedal hard and gets rid of that wussy, tinny sounding stock note
out of all the headers i got under the house it flows the best across the board but due to ground clearance or lack of its being dumped for a sidewinder
nice nice, well the bus is lowered, but nothing crazy, only about 3 inches i think so there is plenty of clearence. Where abouts did you get the thunderbird from and do you know where I could look at one on a website or something? and my engine is by no means performance, just ol' stocker, you don't think it would be over kill?
it was probably mick motors but ive bought a few zorts over the years so im not 100% sure
vw fumes corrupt the memory
just about every header mob make a quiet pack
i just like the thunderbird one better than empi, bugpack, SS etc
more solid and bigger pipe design
george at classic vw would have them on his website
sorry to lazy to look atm
some food for thought on the subject tho:
for a beetle but quietpacks fit busses as well

no wukkas, thats what these forums are for
geez u need to get to some VW shows then
my bugs a shitheap compared to most
that is true! pfft now now, im sure you are being modest haha. But there is some pretty smicko ones in VWMA on a regular basis hey...
p.s emailed mick motors and they get a shipment of thunderbird 4-1's tomorrow. Probs will chuck on dual quiet packs and get some J pipes... who needs heaterboxes anyways pfft

Yeh you obviously havent seen my car if you think his is the sexiest and quickest 😂
Even though it is, as he likes to refer to it, "Pov"😬😂
Simon
hahahahah. i was trying to think of a good analogy... something to do with paris hilton.. and looks on the outside but dont go inside...or something rude along those lines you know :P?
BTW Carter, I have a single quiet pack as well and the ground clearance really does suck at times. Gets anoying having to leave every driveway or ramp sideways and my car isn't even lowered. The other problem is that mine doesnt give much in the way of manifold heat, so my car rarely idles 🤪
Does make it sound awesome though and you can feel a small gain in performance 👍
Simon
oh cheers mate for the info. yeah my Kombi never idles to great anyways until it warms up a bit. And even though the bus is lowered, im not sure if it would be as low as a beetle haha, but we'll see hey.
Yeah kinda was after a nicer sound and a bit more oomph so thats good to hear 😂
I used to run thunderbirds on my S, sometimes with the quietpack from the previous set of thunderbirds, sometimes with the glasspack that came with the final set. Always had a great sound.
I know I'd love a set for my van, but do they even make ones that can go on a type4 motor? Currently my exhaust, post heaterbox, is quite probably the worst exhaust ever conceived.
It starts off with four pipes, which merge into two, then one. The two sides pretty much point at each other. Then there's the muffler pipe. Same diameter as the rest, with a rather sad looking muffler clamped on after that. Has a horrible exhaust sound, sort of like it's running on one cylinder. I can hear all the valve gear ticking away happily, and this obnoxious "BOB-BOB-BOB-BOB" noise coming from the tailpipe, not the nice burble that real extractors have.

Yep. A type4 motor bay camper. I don't know, giving me a link to that page with the PDF of hardcore porn!
To be honest I never even knew that there were small flange T'birds.
I like the look of the one for the type 4 motor. Except the muffler. I can't make out from the pic what sort of flange they are using. If no-one here knows I might shoot off an e-mail to ask.
Because it's going off to the side I know I can't use my old glasspak. Pity.
Well, if someone for some bizarre reason decided to donate to me some turbo gear (as if that'd happen), I think I would go for that exhaust, have it hooking up out opf sight somewhere, maybe the battery bay with battery relocated, have the turbo there, and the out pipe popping out next to where the in pipe came in, and having just a straight pipe sticking out where the original tailpipe would be. No-one would suspect a thing. Hehehe. Well, that is until it was given some serious boot, the turbo spools and the fiery wrath of an unbaffled turbo spreads to declare Armageddon. Or something like that.
Oh yeah Joel. I did anopther assessment on how to fit a supercharger on a type4 motor, and before I got a headache and gave up again, I noted a few things.
It would be easier than I thought previously to fit a different custom machined crankshaft pulley ring. If the hypothetical pulley were done as a grooved belt, and offset a few mm outwards, and a matching pulley for the alternator were made, it would fit in a stock bay with only one other mod, which is a lot worse than I thought.
There is a small fin on the fan shroud which is the only thing really in the way of that idea, Grind it off you say? That's what I would have done. But for the first time ever I noticed that is where the engine number is stamped, which is a bit weird. It is also stamped underneath where an air deflector needs to be removed to see it.
Starting to like the centre shaft idea even more after that. Or a turbo instead. I've got a great setup for forced induction now. It's killing me that I can't do it!

hahaha i love the deception.... love it.. one day i may do the same thing...
i know that vintage VW has A1 sidewinders... which got a pretty good wrap... A1 won best new VW product a few years ago for it...
stainless and tucked away...pretty smicko
if you got the thunderbird extractor you could always get a zorst shop to do up a flange so you can chuck on a fatboy muffler sideways or something haha
I wish I had T'birds on the van. Instead I have an awful exhaust that looks like it was made by someone on work experience out of scrapmetal. Flows about as well too. Ther is one good thing about it though. The metal is thick enough to be welded with an arc welder. I fixed some of the cracks in the 'collector' with it. By its design I'd say when a cylinder on one side fires, it'd be ramming a decent chunk of its gasses down the pipe for the other side. Very unsmooth move.
I'm tempted to buy another chunk of plate and try to make my own adapter flange. That is, one with the bolt pattern of the big T-birds, but has a small hole to accommodate the pipe diameter of the existing exhaust. Lop off the pipe with the angle grinder, weld on the homebrew flange and at least have marginally better flow for the last part of the exhaust. After the 2->1 collector the pipe is really shameful.
Have any pics of the sidewinders?
I said my setup would be great for forced induction because I have a single weber progressive setup on right now, and there is tonnes of engine bay space, even more now that I've removed the spare wheel well. Not a job I would recommend to anyone who values their sanity.
I think with a turbo / supercharger it'd go from 80 to 100 in less than a minute! Haha.

I don't have money either 🙁
But I can dream, and when things improve a little here I can start saving too. First thing is first though. Getting it a Victorian rego.

I just shaved a few decibels of anguish off the exhaust. Because I have been fiddling around so much in the bay I checked the timing again. It was at only about 4 or 5btdc. Now it's somewhere around 7ish. Would I wouldn't give for a proper strobe that actually works. I have one but it doesn't. So I'm using one of those inline ones with slightly modded ends to fit on the sparkplug, and into the dissy connector. Their light is pretty poor.
It's also the first time I've started it since I bolted on the steel plate where the spare wheel well used to be. Seemed to take a few dB off cabin noise.
Something just occurred to me.
Over the next five weeks I'll be going to DECA to get what I believe to be a Forklift and HR license, and other warehousing certification. In that group of people it is quite likely I might find a helpful person with a MIG. Maybe.
I really want to start driving my van around again. It runs so much better than the Falcon. It'd want to. I've rebuilt the topend three times, and replaced the entire intake system.
