Hi again trevor

its most probably a loose bulb or loose wire connection
in one of the blinkers on that side...
could be a bad earth...

check to see what bulb isn't flashing when its intermittant
and give the light a hit with Your hand...

cheers

Hi Trevor
Your 72 beetle
is it a 1302S super beetle or a Non super beetle..

Supers have the spare wheel laying flat..

and now i know You have a 1972 beetle..

Blinker units work with a loading of two x 21 watt bulbs
any less that that and they blink faster...
if yours stops blinking altogether, its probably a loose connection somewhere....

cheers
