why do you want a NOS crank

Personally i would prefer a regound old one as its been around and running for a while and has not flowen apart

both rod and main bearings are still available in all oversizes
I read it on FACEBOOK so it must be true

I agree with Dave , I see your after tinware aswell, i'd just try pick up a complete 36hp motor and regrind the crank.
I have a few complete motors if that works for you.
Everything 36HP !

just be aware that a lot of the "old" ones are actually cracked................. Stan had 4 cranks crack tested before we found a good one for my "steroids 36hp".

Good ones are out there, just spend the $$ now in crack testing instead of having your motor crap itself later.😎

yes before you go to he trouble with ANY crankshaft it should be cleaned and visually checked for obivious defects in the dowel pin area and pully areas then checked for size to see if it can be reground next of to the crack detection shop ( magnaflux is the best method ) then polished and blended finally machined to size, of course obtaining the right size bearings as well

hi fellas. Ive already pulled down four out of five engines to find they were basically rooted. They turned nicely by hand but had already been under the knife a few times and were as good as dead. No cuts left. While that solved the tinware problem I still only have one engine for two busses.

Id like to start with a NOS crank as Id like this bus to be around for quite some time and dont want to have to chuck a block the next grind around cos I cant get bearings or the crank is finished.

Anyone got a source for bearings in Australia??

Also Craig, Im interested in your 'roids 36. I was tempted to make a stroker but the cranks are ridiculous (~$780US not including shipping). Anyone know someone who could cut a 69 stroker crank here in Oz for about that (or less)?

Lots of questions... anyway. Cheers all

Dale

Yep Vintage 02-9789-1777 have all the sizes and oversize backs as well

To cut a stock 69 mm crank into a 64 mm crank it physically WONT fit in the 36hp case

You could cut some counter weights from plate steel and have them welded onto the 64mm crank

Ive seen this done in the USA but time consuming and expensive if you dont do it yrself

You might also ring Vintage to see if they have a 36hp crank not sure if theres any left

You can stroke using holden rods to 66mm,
or using undersize holden bearings upto .060" more....67.5.

Yes, very common for cracks to develop.
Porsche actually increased the FW main and thickened the cheeks to improve this.

Counterweighting can improve things a bit,
as can a nice 8 dowel job to help those poor 7mm dowels.

I am sure Volsbahn will have a NOS crank there, but ake your 'roid cream.

Hey thanks for the info. Great to have a source for bearings. I was looking at mrmotorhead and mrokrasa strokers from the states. They have a 69 and a 74mm stroker for the 36 based on Okrasa cranks. They both need a little clearancing but are the most common o/s strokers.

Interesting about the holden rods (which ones?). Ive got some OS pots and jugs and a isky cam to go in as well. My last 36 responded so well to a full balance.. was incredible, but I sold that car on. All my engines get a full balance now. How does a full balance compare to a counterweighted crank?
