Can you set up an air-cooled vw engine to have a left and a right exhaust that do not meet in any way?

Just curious to know if it is something that can be done.

I think it would be harder to balance the engine, especially if it was a twin carb set up. I reckon it would look cool though.

twin cannons for buggies have been around for decades and few have been adapated to beetles/kombis

im stuck working on 3 trikes with them and trust me from a performance point they suck
bottom end is crap with twin exhausts

for proper scavaging effects an equal length 4into1 header is best

that siad tho alotta ppl run twin cannons on buggies and bajas etc and are happy with them but most of those ppl havent ever experienced their cars with a properly tuned zorst system

A "true" fully merged exhaust will have a pipe order the same as the firing order -1-4-3-2

To do this properly you need that extra length to get the pipes round to line up
Most semi-merged shorter exhaust go 1-4-2-3

see here trace it out - you can clearly see 1 and 3 next to each other

What i am trying to say is the best is the fully merged full scavenging set up

The worst would be single exhausts

Dual cannons is 2nd last

You are right on there though

HUGE mudtyres on the back
Motor cycle tryres on front 4" Fuchs
2L dual webers and these cannons out the back

LOVED IT

four into one systems would be the way to go for performance and sound i reckon. the dual cannons ive heard sound like a sloppy fart after a feed of green apples. or a harley.

Eveny on V8s, V12s and the like, for a street engine a balance pipe between the banks adds torque and, for moderate amounts of cam timing, even horsepower.

for a buggy - I'd like to see a merged exhaust going forward - merging maybe over the gearbox?
Then twin pipes coming out the sides like the 'canons'. These can then be protected (along with the belt) from soft hands.
The benefit is that pipe work is not hanging out the back - cage can be shorter and doesn't need all the crappy mesh over it...
