I started dismantling my 72S yesterday for resto and came across a couple of things I know nothing about. I am learning as I go.

One. There is two hoses that look like the windscreen washer hose that come through the dash and into the bottom of the turn signal switch housing? The hoses go to nowhere. Maybe it was an old washer motor?

Two. On the instrument panel there is a lamp situated at about 8 o'clock. The picture beside the lamp looks like a coil or a spring laying on its side in a box. I traced the wire and it goes down to the left side door switch? I can't find an explanation anywhere in my manuals. I have never seen the lamp light up.What is it?

Thanks, Brad.

The two hoses are for your windscreen washer. In the original setup the washer is powered by compressed air from the spare tyre and is controlled by a valve in the wiper switch.(Your wiper switch is on the column right?)

The light I believe is for your rear window de-mister. This was an option and is not always hooked up. If it is the switch should be down near the fuse box. No. 13 in the pic

Hi

The factory heated rear window rocker switch locates in a rectangular hole near the fuse box. That where I have fitted my on/off switch for my radio.

Keep the factory washer bottle as it fits nicely into the boot area, but fit an electric pump on it, fit a micro switch into the location of the original pneumatic switch.

Thanks guys.

The po has fitted a electric washer motor to the bottle and a switch to the dash. I wanted to make sure before I pulled the old hoses off. Wow,the old washer was run off the tyre pressure, how ingenious lol.

I dont have the de-mister switch so I guess it was not hooked up or disconnected at some stage. The wire from the bulb goes down to where the left door switch is. Is that the usual path for that wire to the back window?

My mistake.

The lamp in question is the one about 9 o'clock just above the de-mister lamp. It has a picture of what looks like a headlight with three dashes coming off it. The wires go to the door switches. What is it? Interior light switch maybe? Once again I have never seen the lamp light up but the po disconnected the interior light. Open circuit?

Which brings me to a almost tragic story. Two weeks ago I am driving home and smoke starts pouring into the cabin through the front vents. It smells like plastic. I pull over and open the front lid to see a wire loom melting and catching fire. I quickly grab a shifter and disconnect the battery and stand back and watch my car catch fire. Freaking out I start grabbing the wires with my bare hands ,extinguishing the flaming plastic. Man that was close!

Anyway, after some investigation I find that the po had disconnected the interior light and shoved the bare wire ends back against the roof. Obviously over time the wires have come to rest across the bare matal roof. What about the fuse you say? Yeah ,the po had stuck in a 25amp fuse.Still, it should of blown. But silly me for not checking them when I bought it. Lesson learnt.

does ur speedo also have an idiot light on the other side marked ATF??

sounds like u have either a later semi auto bug speedo or something out of a import bug as aus bugs never got heated rear windows and only later semi autos which were fully imported had provisions for it

the green light is the "city lights" indicator
it should turn on whenever the parkers are on so no it shouldnt be connected to the door switches, just the parker circuit

the things POs do with interior light wiring.....🙄
when i took the dash out of my convertable i found they had cut clean thro the interior light wiring when they cut the roof off and it had been left live and just fused into a nice melted mess.....

Hey Joel, this is the speedo. The one marked 'A' is the lamp thats connected to the door switches. 'B' has no bulb in it, just a plastic plug.

So what does 'A' do? I don't understand "city lights".

Hi

I bought the same type of metric speedo for a car of mine on Ebay, it also had all those additional warning lights and no 1/10s Ks like yours.

I believe the B is the heated rear window lamp....

A could be used for fog lamps etc....
