Buy the new one,
I wouldn't buy a "reco" type 4 head, especially if you want to keep you van for a while.

Menangler is right, speaking from personal experience a new unit is definitely cheaper as you only have to do it once.

New AMC heads are around $600 if your running stock cam, springs and retainers will be ok, if different than stock cam change springs and retainers to HD singles and chrome moly retainers.
This is my Volkswagen, there are many like it, but this one is mine. Without me my Volkswagen is useless, without my Volkswagen, I am useless.

If I were you I'd 'rebuild' the brand new head with new good quality valves and springs before using it. I didn't, and broke a valve spring within 2000km. Crappy Chinese bits apparently.

Cheers, A.

60,000 K's on 2.1 WBXer AMC heads no problems, even fine with 1.4 rockers.

2 Ltr Air cooled AMC heads have been in a mates van for 4 years, no problems.

buy the new heads, reco's are not worth the trouble, seats tend to fall out and is often incorrect material. AMC heads are built for unleaded, have long lasting guides and seats which are peened in too. Springs, collets and retainers are a bit shitty, change them out. First check is for cracks-in the exhaust ports on the chamber side, spark plug bosses, between seats/ports. If there are cracks, throw them in the bin. Worn guides can be fixed with K-liners or new guides. Check for loose guides and give each one a mild smack on the chamber side with a 2lb hammer and machined stepped punch which fits the guide snugly. If it moves, it will need replacing with an oversize. check for loose seats- examine the edge of the seat where it is pressed into the head and in the port. Any clean lines(moving seat), signs of pounding or looseness, throw the heads in the bin. Heads with recessed seats should not be used either. Hope this helps.
