The Beetle was pretty good in its day in fact; Beetles were the first Australian-made cars to be fitted with seat belt mounting points, years before they were mandatory. 1968 Beetles had safety collapsible steering columns and safety switches. The Superbug was designed to meet US safety regulations and the nose does act as a crumple zone to some extent. Look at the other cars of the day - Morris Minor, Mini, Simca, Vanguard, Toyopet etc and Beetles come out well.

The MK1 Golf is a unitary body and was designed with safety crumple zones. It was state of the art in 1974 and I would still rather be in one of them instead of say a Kia Rio in a crash. Each Golf generation is further improved, and yes the current ones are five-star. You can't do better.

Even VW's Transporters have been superior to the competition. The T2 Kombi had a front crumple box and 'y-frame' front crossmembers 20 years before Toyota thought of them. The T3 Kombi was even better. The German TUV tested all the front control vans on the market in 1988 - VW, Hiace, Urvan, Mitsubishi etc and only the Kombi passed the test. The Lite-Ace was particularly unsafe.

>A mirror is replaceable, a husband to my wife is not. (in my lifetime anyway).<
That's not what she said to me!
Remember. If you don’t keep playing with it, it won’t work when you want it to.
