I'm not connected in any way to Cranky Kits but I've got to say I'm absolutely chuffed with the starter system I bought from them a few weeks back. I've had my buggy for nearly 21 years with different VW engines and it's never turned over so easily. Well worth the money!!

Yeah, I just wish he had his kit before I bought my brand new (remanufactured) 2L VW starter! Oh well, maybe in a few years when the VW item has had enough of turning over the V6!

That POS will never last that long. You will have a Cranky Kit before the end of the year.

I have changed all my starters to Cranky Kits and will never run anything else, they are awesome and do a great job.

Anyone thinking of getting a new starter motor should get one and not buy a crappy VW one.

These crankykits may be a great way of replacing the starter with a better one, but you cant tell me one little piece of machined alloy, a pinion gear and a couple of bolts is worth $250.

Sorry, but its bloody expensive.
I thought rebuilding a VW would be cheap - Shit I was wrong, just don't let the wife know !!!!

Camo, You didn't mention it was a custom pinion and a laser cut and machined adaptor plate.

Nor did you mention the R&D that goes into producing a quality kit, and it's made in Oz.

I have one and I think it's worth every penny. It's cheaper then a high torque starter and the parts are easier to come across.

I don't think it's cheap, but it's not a cheap kit, it's a quality kit.

If you think it's too expensive don't buy one. Your loss 🙂

The piece of alloy is machined in low volume in Australia, not mass production in China. That makes a huge difference to the cost.

MikeM - Calm down. If you read the first sentence of my post it says "These crankykits may be a great way of replacing the starter with a better one". I just thought it seemed a liitle much for the parts as I mentioned them "one little piece of machined alloy, a pinion gear and a couple of bolts".

I'm really glad you are happy with yours and I was not putting the product down, just stating my thoughts re the price.

Also, I didn't mention I was going to buy one so why did you say "If you think it's too expensive don't buy one. Your loss".

Sorry if I have pissed you off, but it was just my 2 cents worth.

I take on board what has been said, that this is a better way to go than a high torque starter. But this gets away from me just stating that I thought the kit was a little dear.

i looked at the website but they dont do vw starters anyway? looks like its a subaru thing so not really of interest to most here i would think. they should look to china for a better deal. way too expensive to manufacture this sort of thing in australia. i can achieve a lot for $250 with a vw starter. ill need another for my 1800 kombi soon but new vw starters still look the goods from where i see it

You missed the point. This replaces a VW starter on a VW gearbox with a modern geared hi torque starter off a Subaru, with a custom pinion and mounted on the supplied adapter plate.

I can see where Camos' comiing from but as I mentioned over the years I've always had trouble with the bloody things.I've tried good 2nd hand starters, rebuilt starters, new starters but after a short while the slow starting noises, the charging of batteries but never has a starter sounded so sweet as the cranky kit so if I'd been able to buy one at the beginning I reckon I would have saved a lot of money, stopped a lot of swearing and not had that worried look on my face while sitting on the Noosa ferry worrying about the embarrassment of having to push my buggy off the other end!!!

mm ok I am getting confussed now and I have 3 of them ..

The Cranky kit consists of a custom machined adapter plate which allows a Subaru Starter Motor to be used on the VW Gearbox with a VW engine. The kit also includes a custom pinion gear to suit VW Flywheel and mounting hardware.

So for about the same price as an aftermarket / remanufactured VW Starter you get an adapter kit that will outlast you engine and allows you to use a chaep subaru unit which has more torque and crank speed than anything else on the market to suit.

I have a brand new 2L starter and Hi-Torque unit and the Cranky Kit with stock suby starter out performs them both with less power draw.

Anyway they are the facts, I have tested, measured and the results meant I bought 3 of them and pulled the VW ones out which are prone to failure.

Dude I'm Calm. that's what the 🙂 is.

Just cuz I don't agree with you doesn't mean I'm not calm.

That custom laser cut piece of machined alloy with custom pinion is worth $250 of saved headaches. You Told me I couldn't tell you, well I am, it's worth $250 to me, and looks like a few other people in this post agree.

A local enthusiast doing some good work, producing a good kit. If you want Chinese crap parts you get what you pay for.

Support the locals boys. They're trying to support the scene. Nobody in China supports the local scene.

Thanks MikeM and when the time comes for a starter motor performance upgrade, I will seriously consider a cranky kit.

Cheers, Kevin
