This is the latest, sixth Generation VW Novo Gol that went on sale in Brazil last year. It is based on the current VW PQ24 platform, the same as the Polo.

The name 'Gol' means 'goal' in Portuguese (not to be confused with 'Golf', which is also sold in Brazil). The first Gol (1980) had an air-cooled 1300cc or 1600cc VW engine mounted in the front. The Gol, over five generations, has been the biggest-selling car in Brazil for over 20 years, and more than 5 million have been made. Variations of the Gol have been called the VW Voyage, Pointer, Fox and Parati.

The latest 'Novo Gol' (New Goal) is a modern redesign from the ground up. It comes with a choice of 1.0-litre or 1.6-litre 'Total Flex' engines, which automatically run on any grade of petrol and any ethanol content, up to 100% ethanol (E100). In Brazil E20 petrol is the mandatory minimum - straight petrol has been unavailable since 1993.

The VW Total Flex engine produces MORE power and torque on E100 ethanol than it does on E20 petrol - 77 kW on E100 and 75 kW on E20 (156 Nm / 154 Nm).

No chance of it coming to Australia, I don't think.

I was talking to my Brazilian friend who runs www.volkspage.net (in Portuguese) and the prices of these cars are just crazy; as taxes are very high.
At one stage this Gol with its variants were going to be the entry level car for most markets bar Europe, Australia and North America but VW changed to the up! family and Polo V for India and Russia.

In April VW Brazil will release the new Saveiro the Ute version of the Gol so stay tuned to AVD 🤓

It won't for now until the Government decide on which fuel to invest and back.

The technology learnt in Brazil could still come here if Ethanol was to be the fuel of choice.

Apparently the older generation Brazilian ethanol engines had problems when driven to non-ethanol countries, when they were filled up with normal petrol. They would run but would misfire and ping, etc. Latest engines, such as the 'Total Flex' engines fitted to the new Gol, shouldn't have this problem and they ought to run on anything from 91 octane petrol up to E100 ethanol.

I am not sure what the latest ethanol plans are for Australia. E10 seems to be fairly common now; does anyone know if this is going to be made mandatory, and if higher ethanol mixes such as E20 are going to be sold here? If so it wouldn't work on old cars, but for new cars designed for it (such as the Gol) it might be the way to go. Australia doesn't have the crop growing areas and high rainfall that Brazil does, however, so if ethanol became widespread I think it would have to be imported.

I see the smaller Brazilian Fox is sold in Europe; maybe they think the Gol is too close to the Polo?
