Now i don't live in a cheap skate suburb actually i live in a fairly good suburb, but this morning i walked out to find the engine lid of my second 68 beetle (which is sitting in my driveway) open. Thankfully nothing serious was taken, just looks like they tried to find the petrol line with no luck :P (Semi-auto has a few more pipes then normal).
I put one of the pipes back on and left the vacuum advance off and reversed her into the garage... but i mean come on... Are VW owners still stealing from other VW owners.
(I reckon they were after the air filter or something but i have taken that off recently.)
So now i need to lock every gawd damn lock on the thing :P

Except for when your driving - fire is not cool. I guess if your going to park outside and its openable, you have to check its sweet before you get in and go. think about it, what other car can you get into the engine that easily???
I find it terrible that anyone would have that much disrespect. Especially if it was another VW owner.... what goes around comes around and to be that rude will cause bad things to happen to that person. We are all here to help each other.... not steal or be rude and disrespect each other.
I do live in a rough area but with the exception of finding one morning the Kombi would not start and had no ignition lights (you guessed it) Some mongrel had stolen the battery! Nothing has happened here. I did have my chromed badge taken once though that was visiting a very good suburb. Now I believe that would have been a vee dubber tho doubt battery pincher was.
As colonel said unlock before driving, as you wont get a chance if a fire starts
alarms are getting cheaper and better equiped all the time
i put one in for a mate a few months ago he got off ebay for $40 and it has all the same features my $399 cyclops system does
beetles already have holes in the valance that are pefrect for the bonnet trigger that comes in alarm kits
ive had the same thing happen before when my bug was out a few years ago except at 2am the alarm going off clearly scared the shit out of the person and they legged it leaving only a greasy hand print on the decklid
Lost a petrol cap off the Kombi at Warwick farm station another time park in the front yard also had the Kombi broken into nothing stolen just had a look in the glove box they left it open they had no taste left my 70's and 80's tapes untouched
A wave a day keeps the doctor away especially in a VW 😎:
Hi
I live is reasonably good area in southern Sydney, but with wayward kids, thats where some kids jumped on the roof of our bug in the driveway.
Steve
Lucky I have a Baja. You have to unbolt the engine cage off it. Not that there's much worth stealing anyway.
If you said I was a Volkswagen man, you'd be right.
It doesn't matter where you live in relationship to vulnerability of theft or damage.
These are the type of social times where good people do strange things due to circumstances. Let alone the nrmal habits of the baddies.
Thieves also don't go to so called poorer areas to do their 'shopping'.
In the better areas most adults work leaving houses unattended during the day making them easy targets.
Simple thing is you do not trust anyone and take nothing for granted.
We have been broken into 3 times. plus
1 car stolen with a key after they stole my mates car that was the same type. It ran out of fuel around the corner so they walked to mine, put in his key and off they went. plus
All gear from my boat stolen twice from behind locked gates.
All this over 12 years.
I even had a german shepherd that didn't like strangers but the hit him on the head with a hammer.
I just fixed my oval and the 62 beetle engine lid locks they haven't worked ever on my oval and the 62 use to work before it went to the panel beaters so just had to move the handle around now they both work. I'm happy now just have to remember not to have them locked while driving them.
hmmm.... makes me nervous having a baja motor exposed with nuffin but a fan belt gause cover and a bit of barwork.
Some cheaky prick could even change the firing order to be a smart arse.
Perhaps a proximity alarm and a set of flame throwers could scare em off. 🤓
Or just a Big dog, giant lizard, pet snake, a mother in law... sumfin intimidating in the car.
even alarms don't stop thieves. A flat battery in Browns Plains shopping centre resulted in a 'funky' sounding loud alarm goin haywire as we roll started it... and despite it sounding and looking sus with a crowd of turning heads, no one stopped us, said hey or reported nuffin of the rego (otherwise i'm sure the police would have contacted me or sumfin :S). I even sped off just to play the roll cause i'm an attention seeker, nuffin came of it.
What can u do i guess.... Even 3rd party and theft wouldn't cover small claims.... as for sum of us, particularly my age group, the excess is around $600 or $800.

It jsut shows that no one has respect anymore, its terrible. And red62e thats terrible about your dog, some people need help.
my bus stays locked in the shed and my Hilux and civic stay outside in the driveway. That way they have to move 2 cars before getting it out. Easier to replace parts on the Hilux and civic over saome of the hard to get and one off bits that my bus has.

its bad enough if you car is stolen..
but taking spare parts from it isn't good...
I'll have to start locking My engine cover too...
a sensor that goes off when glass is broken etc...
should be mandatory... in cars..
Hi Volume alarm horn speakers should be inside the car...
cheers

New years eve 1992 late arvo, (still daylight) my yellow and white '77 delux Micro was parked in my driveway and some @#$% took my brand new Dual 44 IDF Weber carb kit, never saw them again.
It was a VW person too, new exactly what to take and how to get them off quick.

shit that would ahve been worth an arm and leg! How much u paid for it? would insurance pay for such a thing, taking into account the cost value?
(IE: if u had fire and theft... and they stole sumfin mandatory of the car to make it work, could it be paid for by the insurance company)? Or cause they didn't steal the WHOLE car, they won't?
Some things to think about with fire and theft, i'm sure if i looked at the policy hand out it would explain fire and THEFT cover.... but...
If they stole a motor... would they cover it? (no...? cause its not the car itself?) If they stole the shell and left the motor? (No? caues they left the motor and its not the car itself?)
Then what is defined a the car? :S

Yeah, I find it a weekly issue on Thursday and Saturday nights when the pubs close. At least in my part of he world they are just being opportunistic and looking for loose change.
Still the other week, I was parked on the main street in Kal as I went off for breakfast at 7am. 3 brothers passed by and I had to get into a shop door way to make room for them. I couldnt help my self but just leaned against the doorway as they walked past the softtop. Sure enough, one brother peels off and walks up and puts his hand on the door handle. I yell out Oy!. He turns around and yells back "its a pile of s..t". I know I replied, but Ive almost paid it off. You gotta love country livin.
It is as it is - If you didnt enjoy today, you've missed the opportunity.
Doesn't matter if a car is described as a pile of s..t. If it is your pile, then others can keep their fingers off. I will never park on the street. If it is not there, no one can touch it. I keep my piles in a locked garage behind a locked gate with an alarm on. Get through all that without dogs raising alarm and you must be gifted.
hell ive had one of the boys at work decide to play funny buggers with the ignition system on my bug. he quickly changed his tune when i told him it better be back to as it was and running perfect or i was going to get it serviced and charge him for it.
the look on his face when i got a screwdriver out and popped the bonnet on his commodore and then started to look at the wiring with a set of side cutters in my hand. this was just to teach him a lesson.

I never really worry, as I park outside the Woolies or Coles
as close as I can, especially at night
so the car can be seen from inside...
I live in a good suburb... What suburb?? of Scone. lol
I suppose you could call it a good part of Scone...
but at night [only time i'm worried] when I'm not in SCONE, the Very Bright BLUE Flashing LED in the dash can be seen very easily..
Mostly, I get good comments from late teenagers...
but there are stupid drunks druggos.. etc who are more likely to damage your Car.. [Only guessing]
I think I'd rather have something stolen than damaged beyond repair... I hate vandalism...
I sometimes lock My engine cover... when parking in underground car parks.. [not in Scone]
But My beetle is always parked in My Yard with two dogs
and a locked gate... the alarm is always ON...
Fuel pump switched off...

A mate used to have his 61 bug (Now my baja) parked in our paddock as he had a shack down the road that had no fences. You could just see the bug from the road, (450m away from the road) I jumped in her one day to start her. Wouldn't start. No spark.... Someone had walked near 500m just to swap the leads on the distributor around.
Another mate used to have a homemade buggy under a tarp he used to use occasionally. Hopped in it one day tried to turn her over. Clunk Clunk. went round the back, engine was loose and hanging out. Some bugger tried to take the engine but couldn't as he had a towbar welded onto the framework.
Not VW related but when I popped into buy a coffee last week, I caught a kid trying to walk off with my dog, he just dropped the lead and walked off like he had done nothing wrong.
The victim of the crime is fine and well...
So what did you do, march him up to the police station? thats what I would have done.
Yelled a few words and ran to grab the dog who had started to walk into the road, they joys of living in cosmopolitan Newtown!
Times like this I see some raw justice in the hearing about the shopkeeper that had a baseball bat behind the counter and broke the arm of a knife wielding robber. I couldn't imagine there being much sympathy from the attending officers or the magistrate.
The annoying thing is there are people that have the attitude. "It's just a dog" or "It's just a pile of s..t" But they just don't understand it is not their dog or car. Foot it and go away and do some community service to burn off energy instead. Bring back chain gangs breaking rocks I reckon.
Naw, keep it simple. The ratan works for me...
