Alright, most of you may have picked up that i'm putting a stupid fast engine in the '58'.
i don't really have enough dosh to do big brakes now, but i'd like to do something.
Question one - how big a difference do type 3 calipers make on the front end? I've currently got new type 1 calipers bought a year ago that have worked for about 2000k's - what would they be worth?
Question two - how well do the rear disc brake kits work and which is the best combo in relation so to question one. I know there are a few different rear disc brake kits you can buy - how much, how good, how effective? What would my current type 3 rear drums be worth? They are in tops notch and drilled for Porsche pattern - may still have the original VW pattern too - can't remember - guess they'd have to (will check photo)
Rear disc kit will need to have Porsche pattern too.
I would say you are going to have to do something pretty good to get it passed with a wrx motor. The list goes on and on!
Ask Westi about the setup he had on Junka before it went fully raced up. They were off a nissan 200sx similar to what I have done.

Volks Conversions on the Gold Coast will do kits to suit the stud pattern you need. Cross drilled rotors etc etc he does them all.

Alder Outlaws VW Racing - check it out on fb!!
Ian has standard super bug brakes on his and they work good. That was all that was needed for the engineer no need to go overboard.
But you may require something better if your going to race it.

you could go down the EA falcon rear disc, with your current fronts, that's what i use and am very happy with it...........not too expensive...........that's what is on the rear of the race notch with big type 3 fronts tho and it stops fine
VWCOOL could help out with rear discs in porsche pattern, and i'd just stick to that and up grade front later if you manage to keep your beetle off the "walls" 👍
i'll take the type three drums off ya,no questions, just let me know when and how much!
Talk to VW Cool he has some big ass brakes that work well and no doubt he can hook you up a test drive

Hi
I went to early Type 3 front callipers on my daily 1303, these use a 42 rather than a 40 mm piston, if you can locate a set for a good price they are a good upgrade.
When looking for them they are 2 pin with only 1 bleed nipple, beware they will try to sell you 72 Superbug ones, these still have 40 mm pistons.
What does the engineer want as far as braking goes?
I think VWCools front with Falcon rear would be nice.

VWCOOL kits don't work with dropped spindles. Would his rear kits suit the type 3 front kit. Can you not buy type 3 fronts new??? Anybody have a good second hand set?
hi, does it really make a lot of difference to the stopping ability of a vw putting on big brakes if u run small wheels for ex - 135-165 fronts and 185- 205 rears
I have VWCOOLS 'small' rear brake kit which uses nissan stuff on the rear of my race car. I have T3 fronts and the conversion is a perfect set up with no rear bias required on my race car or no bigger master cylinder. I have had these on the back of the beetle for over 18months now and have no problems what so over. The pedal feel is great and the stopping ability is that much better then the T3 drums. Its more consistant. I would recommend any of VWCOOLS brake set ups having used and abused them on the race track and street. Yes you can by the T3 front calipers new. Or at least you were able to. I have a new set on the front the race beetle which were bought new some 5 years ago.

Please do tell more.... I have a whole ED Falcon diff, disc to disc here and will keep what I need before I trash it. That is if this is a viable setup in a Beetle....

Thank you sir, a bit of reading to do.....
Hi Mick
Bad luck that VWCools stuff is no good for the front.
There are other options, if your going to the trouble of a brake upgrade, you really need to go ventilated rotors on the front at least, other options will cost and you will need to make sure that the engineer is OK with them.
One way to go is to get some Boxster rotors, turn down your existing rotor so that you just end up with a bearing carrier/hub with Porsche bolt pattern, then just slip the Boxster rotor over your cut down rotors. This will give you a very slight track increase.
Then you need to get some Boxster callipers and have some adaptors made like the ones in the photo from Kersher.

hi Steve C
have you used the early 911 front hub and rotors before?
Hi Damo
I had 911 turbo rotors on my yellow bug, they used a Porsche pattern Beetle brake rotor turned down and the Porsche turbo rotor bolted to the back of the Beetle hub in the same manner as Porsche bolt their rotor to the back of their hub.
I still have these for my new car.
The Porsche hubs can be used but they will increase the track as in wheel bolt face to wheel bolt face.
Steve
mmmm Steve that looks like a top setup. Performance would be better than any beetle would need....but who cares😁

The Porsche options would be too exxy for now.
yeah I wish I was rich like Steve😂😂
Steve's stimulating the economy with his credit card😂😂😂
haha! Buy some new property too then - and how about a big boat? You can't NOT have a boat!
you'll be right, put it on the credit card! How could anything bad possibly happen!
I am running Honda NSX calipers and rear disks with Ford Front disks. The calipers are similar to nissan calipers. Did you look into westis old setup?
Reasonable pricing and easy to build.

haven't yet - may be to exxy for now. type 3 fronts and a disc rear (sherman kit or similar) is probably the affordability at the moment.

Hi
I like to stop, no matter what the cost.
I also ran Boxster rears with 944 rotors.
Rose, you guys have too many eggs and too many baskets, I keep all my eggs in only 2 baskets, or should that be money pits.
Steve
i'm running the 996 boxster calipers with 944 running gear also 🙂 based on Steve c research.
Steve, one question if I may: the caliper adapter that you are running up front, it looks to be steel, what thickness is it at the spindle mounts? who made it up for you? I have the modified 944 hubs and drum drop spindles and need something similar to finish off the front.
Stephen
Hi
The brackets are billet alloy, made by LMS many years ago.
My callipers on the front were the old style axial mounting (same as a bug), if you have Boxster callipers they have a radial mounting, you can use the block method like in the Kersher photos I posted above, this bolts to your stock calliper mount holes and the Boxster calliper bolts to the block. I used this method on my rear brakes.
The calliper bracket that I had made bolts to the stock dust shield bolt holes, these were increased to M10.
Steve
cheers Steve, yes I have got the blocks out back but the front is more challenging. I have mocked up a template that is quite similar to yours, I just want to get an engineer involved to do some FMA to prove it is strong enough.
Stephen
Hi Steve C........
these ones, early 911 s s/c..........any experience or advice with them re bearing fittment and calipers..........BJ front end?
thanx

Hi Damo
I dont know too much about them.
There was a lot of this information on German Look, but that site is down for now.
