Hi

I'm about ready to Road worthy my Crewcab and have been told that I may need light truck tyres to be fitted instead of car tyres with it being a commercial vehicle.

Is this info correct and can anyone provide any details of correct tyres? Or at least enough to pass the roadworthy?

Chars

Either light truck tyres, or normal radial tyres, are fine. Remember that Australian-made Kombis up to 1977 were supplied new with Uniroyal Steel Cat radials. But many owners like light truck tyres - they are around the same price.

14", 185, 195 or even 205 width tyres will fit. A 70 or 75-series tyre will ride better than a lower profile 65 series on a Kombi.

Bob Jane has Yokohama 195 x 14 light truck tyres for $119. There is also the Bob Jane All-Rounder steel radial, in 185x14 size, in either 65 or 75 profile, for $99 and $89. http://www.bobjane.com.au/Tyres_range/default.asp

Load index 87 would certainly allow for a Microbus plus 8 passengers plus the double passenger weight allowance. Load index 90 would allow for a bus carrying 1 tonne load. Pretty extreme as not a lot of people would carry that much weight, but allowable.

Then look at the tyres you are getting and make a decision based on speed, load, tyre wear, traction and heat ratings and go from there. Too complicated, just ask your tyre supplier to inform you of what meets the requirements of a 1280kg bus with 8 passengers or a ute with 1 tonne load. Remember a current model Falcon or Commodore are around 1700kg and carry 5 passengers, and they certainly dont have light truck tyres fitted.
