Hey all. Am building a beetle and was wondering if anyone has ever used Dynamat sound deadener or dynaliner heat insulater in any of thier projects. Was it worth it and what advantages do you think you achieved.

Also which parts of your car did you uses it on. If on the roof how did it go getting a hood liner on over the top of it.

Cheers Daniel

I have heard of it being used..

but never seen the stuff...

I used the blue coloured PVA foam that is sold for yoga mats etc Big w Go Lo etc..

I covered th roof with two layers of it...
in the doors - sides - floor - everywhere I could...

I also added it above the gearbox and under the rear of the guards to stop stone chips...

I used contact cement to glue it on -
coat both surfaces with contact cement then let it nearly dry - then push them together - they shouldn't ever come off .. lol

I recently did around the engine bay - inside and out and painted it with pressure pack matt black...

its hard to tell how good it works...
but My Son always says, He wishes His beetle was that quiet... lol

Lee, wouldn't your 'Yoga' mats just soak up any moisture if they got wet? Check out FatMat as well its much cheaper than Dynamat.

Cheers

Funny thing Steve...
the density is TOO high...
water won't penetrate it...
it would float on water for ever...
I didn't know this to start off with... and coated the stuff i used in the doors with silicone and paint..

its the same stuff used on trampolines to cover the springs
only thicker... thats what I have under the guards..

cheers

I did buy some sound deadner from Jaycar...
but it was too heavy...
if I had covered My car in it I would have needed a V8 to carry it... lol

I don't know anything about dynamat...

if its light it would be good...

Just read about Dynomat... $250 is expensive...

the PVA mats only cost $5 each....

but they do nOT have the sound deadning effects I wanted from the floor...

I also did My lancers floor...

doesn't seem to make any difference...

The PVA over the roof certainly makes a difference with the heat... the roof heat in 40C never gets thru into the cabin...

its very high density.. so it should stop sounds -
and weighs Nothing... lol

certainly better than nothing... lol

I think maost of those yoga type mats are closed cell foam which means it wont absorb any water.

Good for insulation, but denser material will work better as sound deadner.

I agree with You Matt...

its the cheapest thing I could find...

and doesn't weigh anything....

Dynamat is the shizz. But I wouldn't cover the whole car in it. For how thin it is its cuts down panel vibration and sound like nothing else. Its not that lite either. There are a few cheaper options that are similar to Dynamat. Edead is one that comes to mind. I wouldn't do area's like floor pan and roof lining in Dynamat but firewalls and inside doors definitely. The EVA yoga mat foam would work pretty good in the other area's. Ormonid works good for cutting down the pan vibration considering how cheap it is and especially when you paint both sides.

whats is the point of covering something to stop stone chips? What looks better? A yoga mat stuck to the underside of your car or a few stone chips?

I'd say the Yoga Mat every time.... but I'm biased....lol

then again I have a car bra on My beetle all the time..

If I could get a clear yoga mat....
I'd cover the rest of the car... lol

I guess the PVA Yoga stuff must work, as I have to lower the side window to hear the nice exhaust sound....

or open the sunroof...

dynamat is exy yea but its a classic case of you get what you pay for

cheap insulations really are a WOFTAM
as my bug used to be entered in sound offs when i did my interior the first time i painted all the floors with septone body deadner which even itself works well but then got the best quality sound insulation at the time as dynamat wasnt around back then and with a stock engine it was nearly as quiet as most modern cars inside
unfortunatley tho theres no escaping dell/weber intake roar without building air boxes which clutter an enginebay to much

if you really want a quiet ride in a bug cover the floors, central tunnel, back quarter panels and rear firewall/ wheel arches in dynamat or something similar
you'll be glad you did

Hi Lee,
Be careful about leaving the car bra on all the time. When we bought the 72 cabrio, it was purple and had used a car bra for a while. Under where the bra was the paint looked new and everywhere else it was faded big time. Looked a lot like the legs of some people that work outside with socks on and then take them off and you see the tan line ringbarking them.

I really never thought of that..
but My beetle is rarely in the sun...
Except when i'm driving.... lol
I usually park in the shade otherwise its in the garage or carport...
I haven't gotten around to having the car cover on it all the time.. except with driving...

I used to do those sort of things years ago... lol

I have a bra for my EH Holden. Personally I hate the look of it, and it offends the look of the car, as the front of the car is one of the things I like the look of amongst other parts.

I will only use the bra on long country trips at sunset or other high bug and insect times as I hate cleaning the spattered guts out of the grille. A Beetle would be real easy to clean with no grille.

My stone chips are my trophies. Driven not hidden.

My son was the first person I knew who'd used Dynamat and it did do a real good job but it was expensive but I noticed that it looks and feels (weighs) like flashing tape that you can buy from Bunnings. It seems the flashing only comes in widths up to about 20cms wide but works out a lot cheaper. I've used it on my other sons Baja and has come out really good. BTW VW used to do bonnet bibs, pretty similar to a bra and I had one on a light metallic blue beetle back in the 70's. They were either solid black or black and white check, I had the check type and even under the scorching hot English sun after about 6 months I had light and dark metallic blue checquered (?) paint when I removed it!!

But the flashing stuff is at least $50 a roll, so are they really that much different price wise?

As a side note, Maybe 8 or 9 years ago I used the narrow flashing tape to cover the floor holes in my bay where holes for camping stuff were cut, as I may want the holes later when I actually get / build an interior. The stuff hasn't budged which really impresses me.

I believe you buy the Dynamat by the square foot and it does work out a lot more expensive but as someone said earlier 'you get what you pay for' and it is made for sound deadening, roof flashing isn't. The thing that got to me was because the flashing comes in a roll so you have to put it on in strips and is time consuming but with a bit of perseverance it doesn't come out too bad and is quite heavy and dense. You can on the other hand still get the tar mat type stuff that VW used originally, bastard stuff to remove if you ever have to get to the floor again. Check out Classic Veedub, they may have it?
