Just got my copy today. Well done Craig, great effort. Not much Sydney stuff in that issue but hopefully the Nationals will fix that for the next issue.

In Keith Hall's article on Greg Norris' sea blue Beetle (with teardrop caravan), it says , "The official birth certificate for the car shows that it left the factory in Germany in November 1964, and headed to Australia for final assembly in 1965."

The Wolfsburg archives do not have data on Australian manufactured cars of 1960-68, so the 'official certificates' you send away for (and pay $$ for) are wrong. That car did not 'leave the factory in Germany' - it was completely manufactured in Melbourne. By 1965 all body panels (including floorpans) were stamped here. 1965 was the first year of the '11y nnn nnn' chassis numbering system, and Wolfsburg would have assigned a 'run series' to the Australian factory to ensure that numbers were not duplicated.

These numbers would have been assigned in late 1964, when the records indicated, when the Australian plant moved from the old to the new numbering system. The car, however, was made (completely) in Melbourne in 1965, using one of those assigned numbers. For 1966-67-68, Australian chassis were given a '19y nnn nnn' number, which the Wolfsburg archives today don't even recognise. Moral - be very wary of ordering 'official' VW birth certificates from Wolfsburg for Australian-made 1960s VWs - they are wrong.

You can also tell that it is not a German-made VW from the body shell. German-made 1965s had the new larger-window body. Aussie '65s were almost identical to '64s except for the new round-top front seats and the new flat-folding rear seat.

Also, there is a great picture of a post '66 Chev Corvair on page 79. Yes it was an air-cooled six, but it was a FLAT six, not a V6. Today they find great use in the US as light aircraft engines (photo below). They fit in Kombis, too...

Hi Phil74Camper,

I must admit I had often wondered if all information on the certificates relating to Australian built Volkswagens was correct... That would explain why there is no record or the colour or engine no. etc

Unfortunately the magazine print makes it appear as Sea Blue but, it is actually Gulf Blue. I have not seen too many bugs in that same colour so it's nice to have something different.

Cheers

Greg

Hi Greg,

Yes, Wolfsburg would have no record at all of paint colours, or what engine was fitted to what chassis number, for Australian-manufactured cars. The Melbourne factory would have had all that info, but when the company went belly-up in 1968 and it was completely restructured, all the files were thrown out (they are buried somewhere at Dandenong tip). Any files that might have gone to LNC industries would have been thrown out when they, too, went out of business in 1987.

According to the Dulux paint charts, Gulf Blue was an earlier Australian blue, replaced by Sea Blue and Bahama Blue in 1965-66. Yours may be one of the last Gulf Blue cars. It would be great to see your beautiful VW parked next to Dave Birchall's Sea Blue at the Nationals! We have made an effort to categorise the Aussie VW paint colours, at http://www.clubvw.org.au/colour_identification.htm

Wolfsburg certainly wouldn't know about the Nissan and Volvo paint colours that were applied to Australian-assembled VWs from 1968 to 1976!

Would be great to have my bug there at the Nationals this year but, unfortunately I don't think I'll have it up and running... Needs the heads reconditioned... I'll just have to drive my Mk4 Golf there which has just cost me alot of money (thats another story)
