Hi,
I started up 1965 Beetle up this morning and petrol started leaking out of the carburetor - the whole middle section like crazy. I smelt the stench of petrol after 30 seconds of engine.

I stopped and checked and found the leak - it wasn't just a leak more like a gushing.

Is it hard to fix the problem - even rebuild the carburetor? I've got the usual spanners and stuff - but otherwise not much mechanical knowledge apart from being able to make an excellent cup of coffee.

The bowl in your carby is flooding
you will have to take the top off the carby and adjust or replace the needle and seat
sometimes a new or extra fibre washer will fix the problem
and sometimes you will need a new n&s
try the quick fix first
Hope this helps

^ most likely the case.

Many carbs also have brass drain plugs in the bowl.
Mine worked its way loose once and the engine ran like crap and died...then there was the fuel stench which lead me to the carbs. 🤓
I found the plug from the LHS carb sitting on the engine tin. Put it in, tightened it up and away we went.

More likely a stuck needle and seat or perforated float but you never know...have a closer look and if that's not it then as Silver said you will have to remove the top cover and check the internals.

Hope you get it running quickly. T

petrol leak means fire is coming your way if you dont get it fixed by someone who knows what they are doing = mechanic
dont drive it till its sorted or you wont be driving it for much longer..

Wise words there h-man.
Very much a fire risk! If you are not confident to repair it then get it looked at by a pro.
VW engine fires do happen...I should know...I have escaped 2 vw engine fires relatively unscathed.
One was actually caused by me directly but that story is for another day. 🥷
Most aren't as lucky just look on youtube it's pretty devastating seeing someone's ride going up in flames...and that's someone elses!
Get it sorted right dude.

Yeah, I'm familiar with fires. 4 years ago I ignored the petrol smell coming from the engine - after driving in it for 20 minutes I decided to pull over to the shoulder. The car stalled on a busy road and I tried to start it up - boom!!! There was flames right down the street where the petrol had leaked. I pulled out my fire extinguisher and put it out. But not before nearly scorching my face.

You are right. I stopped driving it and its now sitting outside my house. I'm getting it towed to the mechanics tomorrow morning. I thought of fixing it myself... but...

The RACV roadside assist mechanic came by to check on it. He said the caburator was flooded and when turn key - it seemed to work fine. He also noted that the auto-ignition may be malfunctioning as its very hard to start it up in the morning and it takes a while to warm up (otherwise it dies). Its running ok - I think I'll drive it to my mechanics place tmw.

back years ago, the needle and seat were replaced along with the distributor cap, rotor button, etc...

with normal servicing...

they are replaceable...

do You have a fuel filter?

as it only takes a small amount of dirt etc to make it leak..

PS: Buy a fire extinguisher

No, I don't think I have a fuel filter.

I do however keep a fire extinguisher in my glove box. The previous one helped saved my engine from destruction by fire.

The RACV mechanics are always a bit bemused when I pull it out when they tell me to start the engine. lol.

I sent the car over to Boris at VOLKSCARE in Boronia. He fixed up the car pretty good. Excellent service. Changed the needle in the Carbie. Looks a ok now.

Trouble again. I drove the car back home but it seemed like 2nd gear had no power (at least for the first 3 seconds).

Then on Saturday I drove the Beetle to the shops and 2nd gear really had no power. I blamed it on an early morning start.

But when i opened up the engine it looked like there was a petrol leak from the manifold - near the hose joint. There was also a small but intense thick smoke coming from the hose joint. Small like a pencil. Weird. What the hell is going wrong with the car... I'm reading John Muriel's book and trying to find out. But if anyone else has got a good idea let me know.

This is actually a new engine built by a reputable VW workshop here - back in 2003. Its been through one fire and numerous smaller problems. But its actually ok. Haven't driven it much due to the nature of my work. Maybe clocked 20,000km all together.

what really puzzles me is why there is smoke coming from the manifold joint. Is petrol leaking into there?

I think I found the problem. The right manifold rubber ring seal appears to have a small tear and is smoking.

There is also a leak in the carbie seal - left side - which is causing a bit of oil to be leaked.

Can I use a bit of silicone to patch up the hole in the manifold?

What about duct tape around the manifold joint?

The "smoke" you see is probably fuel vapour or more specifically highly combustible atomised fuel/air mix and not a good thing to have going on in your engine bay.
The poor driveability is possibly related to this if it is causing a large vacuum leak.
Duct tape might work to get you to the mechanic but it sounds like you need to replace the rubber boot.
May as well get both sides done and get the fuel lines replaced as well as a good tune up.
Think of it as protecting your investment :-)

Speedy Jim from usenet aircooled recommended this manifold boot. Had anyone else used this before?

Its the right one isn't it?
