I think one of the primary reasons VW went to a 1.4 twin charged engine was for fuel economy - its a mighty BIG issue for europe.
Also there is heavy competition out there for the most economical car on the market. The jetta is a heavier car compared to the golf so
figures may vary, but overall the performance is superb (to say the least) and you get awesome economy to boot - 2 for the price of 1 !

Not a day goes by when i give my little golf a quick squirt while driving home, knowing that i can get approx 650 kms to a tank - even
with my heavy foot.

I don't think you'll go wrong with that engine, but the test of time will tell - so far, i haven't heard of any issues.

The other thing with europe is they pay annual taxes based on engine size. Therefore, the smaller the engine, the cheaper to keep the car. With this engine they get excellent fuel economy with cheaper taxes and no performance loss to the bigger 2.0L engines. They win all around and other than the taxes, you will too if you buy one.

Why wouldnt you go with the 2.0L diesel??

You need premium petrol for a Golf and that is the same as diesel

You get GREAT economy and torque in spade fulls

While many people are going down the diesel road, if you’re thinking of buying a new small- or mid-sized car it’s worth doing some research and a few sums before you join them.
Why? There is a price disparity of up to 30 cents per litre, diesel cars usually carry a purchase premium of several thousand dollars over petrol equivalents, and fuel consumption figures around town can be comparable.
So while diesel usually delivers better outright consumption (and is certainly the smarter choice for large, heavy 4WDs), when it comes to smaller/mid-sized cars, petrol power can still cost less.

The reason I'm not after a diesel is that you can't get a manual diesel in a Jetta. You can only now get a manual diesel in a golf. I am just wondering how reliable the 118 tsi is I've driven one and it goes good but how reliable is it there are lots of moving parts and buying a new car and it breaking down would not impress me. Been there bought a landrover once worst car I ever bought.

might be worth a look over at vwwatercooled.org.au
primarily watercooled vdubs over there and lots of info regarding the newer motors etc.
from the rare occasions that i have read faults with the twin charged motors it seems to be a fault related to the supercharger.
see.... air and water do mix 😉
