yes, the gt40 coil does pack more a spark/punch. there is no doubt.

How i know? well, one wet day in the back yard a few yrs ago, i was swappin ova coils to experiment, while trying to work out an ignition problem. i was electricuted by both the bosch blue coili was taking off, and the gt40 when fitting it on. and no kiddin, although airborn on both occasions, the gt40 coil 'shocked' much harder and painfully, beyond a doubt.

Don't ask me how i didn't learn from the first time not to get shocked, i'm me, i'm just like that. even with precautions i still manage to hurt myself haha.

Well, that was my sure first hand evidence/learning experience anyways, and certainly wouldn't look at it any other way.

Chris dont judge a coils output by how far it throws you across the yard with wet hands
a stock coil would have done just the same

to many years experience has taught me the only good thing to do with GT40s is belt them over the fence with a baseball bat either that or keep them in the boot as a get me home back up
another quality product from parrallel import bosch.... 🙄
just do a poll of ppl that have been left stranded by them or had hard to trace misfires/bad running

Bosch blue and GT40 are basically equivalent output
both allegedlly higher than stock german coil but noones that ever fitted one inplace of a good working coil has noticed any difference

theres alot better choices out there than cruddy made in china GT40s with a 30ft/5sec warranty

dean the other model of GT40 the GT40R is not for VW use
its for cars that run a ballast resistor which is most late 70s-80s cars

they run the coils at 9volts thro a ceramic resistor
they only get a full 12volts during cranking over to allegedly give better starting.
my commodore and celica were like that i personally think its a wank but i they wouldnt have bothered if it didnt work

Hi Dean, theres a few good ones out there but unless you do other upgrades like quality electronic ignition, bigger better lead kit, even new cap and rotor its really not worth the extra money
most of the vw parts suppliers stock quality coils
but if your existing coils is working fine i would stick with the devil you know,
you probably wouldnt notice any improvement fitting a GT40.

As I understand it.... the standard style coils, including the GT40 arent much chop over 2500rpm.

The dialectric breaks down over that rpm.

Unfortunately, to get a GOOD coil, and not one thats just adequate, you have to spend up.

Just a matter of whether you want to fork out that much or not.

Mallory coils are up to the task, but I think the price these days is a few hundred.

We are revving 6000 + on the stock coil...

Don't get me wrong.... you can rev it to 10000 and beyond.... but the spark aint much chop.

You would notice a massive difference on the dyno with say a Mallory as opposed to a standard coil anything over 2500rpm.

Anything available off the shelf at Supercheap as an example is simply adequate to do the job.

As most cars rarely go over this rpm, there's no incentive for Bosch to produce a coil that is spectacular..... merely adequate.

That's their market niche.

As I understand it, the GT40 coil is virtually identical internally to the standard Bosch coil.

I believe there's a difference in the dialectric but thats it.

I'll try and find the website I've seen with testing of standard style coils versus performance coils.

The results were shocking.

Good luck mate..... it all comes down to what each person considers an improvement I suppose.

For me, the difference between a standard coil/blue/GT40 and a proper high discharge coil with a more stable dialectric is important, as I'm into the racing side of things.

New hillclimber will be running the Mallory with ignition module. Need it to run to 7500 rpm cleanly. Albeit for only about 45 seconds.....
