What would cause this?
Bearing on its way out?
Swing axle suspension with drum brakes.
Is it safe to drive?

either blown wheel cylinder (brakes) or axle seal (seals oil in)...........either way, you got no brakes on that corner and another job on the asap list

take the cap off
and check to see if its grease coming from the wheel bearings...
and to see if the original grease cap is still there under the chromed cap...

check the smell of it to see if its brake fluid or oil...
brake fluid isn't a lubricant either...
plus brake fluid would be all over the inside of the tyre and wheel..

plus check Your brake reservoir...

Thanks Lee.
Didn't really have enough time to take a good look at it cause I was at work, it was dark when I got home.
Just hoping it should be fine if I drive it till the end of the week?
Guess the car is getting too impatient for this engine swap 😂

ditto daimo...though i think more likely to be axle/wheel bearing seal.
a quick fix might be to dump it so low that no oil can get to the bearing 😉
or new seals and brake liners.
or you could get the rest of those engine bits and do it all in one go.

you can drive it, just be aware that that brake isnt functioning anywhere near as well as it should because its all lubed up.

get a new axle seal kit from a vw place

take off your bearing cap
get a 36mm socket onto the wheel nut with a big cheater bar and undo the nut
back off the brake linings
and then jack up the car and remove the wheel
slide off the drum
it should be obvious now where its coming from, ie wheel cylinder or axle seal
trans fluid smells bad, you will know
either way the brake linings will need replacing and u will need to heavily degrease the drum and backing plate.

wheel cylinder is easy to do just un bolt the old one, in with the new one and then attach brake line, bleed brakes and its done (after u reassemble the drum)

if its the axle seal you will need to remove the bearing cover in the centre (4 bolts) and replace the oil slinger seal in the cover etc basically reassemble the same as u dismantled and u cant go wrong, unless it was done wrong the first time.

good luck
