Do you have the manual for your year kombi. I had three different manuls and between them finally got it out. There is a trick about turning the key some way to do it........ the manuals give you step by step...

hey steve
i have done this several times on 75-76 bay buses n know how frustrating it is when its the first go..
from my memory it goes something like this..
remove steering wheel, unplug 2 plastic half moon style plastic plug clips the very base of/from indictor stork wiper combination switch black thingy (the next thing under the steering wheel) n as you gently prise it out slowly you should have enough rubber hose from the wiper washers to get it out enuff to unclip hoses or unscrew the part,
then you have to undo or break the sheer bolt that is attached surrounding the steering column then the barrel housing should slide up the column and there you go ( i cant remember if you remove the plastic housing around everything but as you pull it apart it will be clear if you need too..)

while its out replace the wiper water hoses,
also the hose connector onto the switch part maybe stuffed that you unscrewed with hoses on
and also a good idea is to get a new end of barrel switch that the end of the key slots into usually a good idea as it'll stuff up about a week after you put it back together..

if sheer bolt is stuffed replace it with a regular bolt too

hope that helps
