Hi all,

Ok, so we here in Qld have finally converted to 'electronic tolling' on our toll roads, which means that it is recommended that we purchase an electronic tag for our cars which is then stuck to the windscreen (I'm sure that those in other states are more than familiar with this system).

So I signed up late last week, and today the electronic tags arrive in the mail - so I rip open the flashy foil bag and grab the tag allocated to ol' Ratty, my faithful '63 Bug and slap it on the windscreen behind the mirror, as I have seen many other people do recently....

... then, later in the evening, after the kids have gone to bed, I decide to read the letter/instructions that come in the flashy foil bag, most of it is straight forward. Then I read the bit about fitting the tag to the vehicle, and in step 2, under the heading of 'Car' I find this sentence:

"If your vehicle has an exterior sun visor, consult your vehicle's handbook or manufacturer to detirmine where the tag should be positioned."

Of course, Ratty is fitted with a mesh sunvisor and somehow I don't think the vehicle handbook for my '63 Bug is going to contain this info.... 😀

Can anyone tell me, do these tags work OK if they are mounted behing the mirror on a Bug that is also fitted with an external sunvisor?

If not, where should I stick it...er...maybe I should re-phrase that to: where on my Beetles windscreen should I relocated the adhesive stand for my electronic tag? 😂

Any suggestions?

When I had my e-toll tag a while ago I knew it had run out of credit so I un-clipped it and left it in my glovebox. And that was in a Statesman I used to have. Once I pulled up to a toll booth on the logan motorway that was both a manual lane and an e-toll lane. As I pulled up I heard a beep from the golvebox and the gate went up. So if these new govia ones work the same I am sure you will have no dramas.

Maybe just try it and see, especially as you already have it mounted. If it doesn't work, ring them and let them know - they may be able to suggest something.

Another thought - what about in the rear window, probably off to one side so it doesn't block your rear vision.

I recently got one for the kombi, also fitted with a mesh visor. didn't work while fitted behind the morror, but did work mounted just above the dash.
Not sure if that will help in a '63, or how much it will block your vision.

we just keep ours in the glove box and get it out at tolls, this way we can use it in any car😂😂

had the etag for a while now. if you want you can sign up on one account and have a separate tag for each car (Just order as many as you want. ) on the online form. we registered 7 cars this way all with their own tags at no extra cost

As for positioning with a visor. I have have solid visor on my btle, rang them up and was told to position it under the rear vision mirror (or in the middle of the dash)

basically at the bottom of the winshield in the middle

hmmm....

Sounds like I may have to move it to make it work properly.

I'm tempted to leave it where it is and see what happens, but for the sake of the hassle (and the extra cost if it dosn't work) I might just move it....

Thanks for your replys....

Toplessbug: interesting that you registered 7 vehicles - I emailed the mob that look after the tags/tolls before signing up and asked if there was a maximum number of vehicles per account - they told me that 3 was the max - which was fine with me as I have 3 cars .... but it's clearly not the case, hey? I wondered if their reply was correct when I signed up, as their web site seemed to be happy to continue to add vehicles to my account after I had entered the details of my 3 cars.....

Just leave it and try it. The extra cost for the video matching is only 40c if it doesn't work. I'm sure you can afford the 40c.

Jeez... 40c.... I dunno 😀

Yeah, your right - for the sake of 40c it is worth doing the experiment for everyone else.

I'll let you know how it works out....

Jeez! I had to dig back a fair way to find this post....

OK, I finally used old Ratty on the Logan Motorway on Sunday (needed to blow the dust off after almost 2 years in hiding!) and, with the tag still fitted behind the mirror and the mesh sunvisor still in place, the tag beeped as it was supposed to, and a quick check of the account (on-line) shows that I was billed for every time I passed under one of their billing points (4 times in total - 2 up and 2 back).

So there you go - looks like the mesh visors don't effect the tags... I wonder if the solid visors do....? That might have to be my next experiment.... 😀
