timing to retarded? running lean? hole in the exhaust? points gap too small? Blocked jet causing lean running?

I don't want to put a cat in the pidgeons but i have had a couple of engines that the exhaust camshaft lobe has been worn away with the result that the exhaust valve doesn't open sufficiently and the exhaust spits out the intake.
