This is in a kombi (type 4) motor. Have some work to do on one with hydraulic lifters.

What's the best way to set them up initially, and once in and installed is there any maintenance on them?
Is there any way to check they are OK?

They are currently set with the adjusting screws all the way in, which seems a bit silly. Can they be backed out and the lifter takes up the slack? Or is there very little lift that they can take up?
When the cylinder is at TDC, there is no clearence, so I assume that is how they are meant to be.

At least with solid lifters you know if the head is dieing 🙂

Thanks for the help.

Richard

maybe ask on Shoptalk

When i had mine - i had an issue and had to redo the setting

Something about VW changing the "official" set up

I "think" you screw the adjuster screw in until it touches and then one more turn
Futue te ipsum!!!

Cheers,
I'll do some hunting around. It is detailed in the manual, but I will need to read it again to get a better understanding.

OK,
Have read the web link a few times, and like the idea of adjusting periodically, but can't say
I fully grasp the concept.

If you have a cylinder at TDC and you adjust the screw on the valve, what happens? Does the lifer adjust to take up the slack with spring pressure alone?

Alternatively, how do you "reset" them if you have no idea where they are set to currently?
