look at the wheel size & offset guide on http://www.boostcruising.com/forums/index.php?showforum=188 if you change your pattern its useful, if you want vw pattern your stuck with old style hotwires, globes, kidney beans etc, mostly all 14's average 7wide, going other patterns you will find wheels to fit the offset perfectly fine in 4x100, 4x114.3, 5x114.3 - for both stock beam/guards, narrowed beams, widened guards, etc, you just have to get offest(ET) correct, depending how the hubs are done the 4stud options may be a better option as the ribs on the back of the discs/drums that are turned down to use as hubs suit this better, that said either option should be fine, once you have worked out what fits your beam/guard combo, then work out how much steering lock you need, narrower wheel+lower offset means it sticks out the same amount but inner clearance is increased, on a BJ front i believe the leading inside edge of the wheel will hit your inner guard before anything else, cant remember what beam work that bug had done to it though but it was 17x7s 4x100 pattern, +38 possibly but dont quote me on it, was years ago but yeah they fit nicely, excluding the limited steering lock/turning circle
