Technical details
For those of you not technically inclined, ignore this section. Otherwise, read on!
I put in a bunch of login / logout fixes. Not only will it be faster as it doesn't refresh the page unnecessarily, it now remembers how to login correctly.
The new cookie code tries three paths to login automagically - session (safest), ubbstate (new cookie format version 1), and finally ubbuser / ubbpw (the old XMB path which has "issues").
For those of you with older style ubbuser / ubbuid cookies, they will be automagically converted to the new ubbstate cookie format with no intervention. When I make some further fixes - essentially removing your password from the state mechanism, it should be transparent to you as well.
Logout now works. The old code output some HTML before trying to set cookies, which never works. The new code eliminates that HTML output, and has all the legendary logout features you'd expect... including rotating the session ID and nuking the bejeezus the server side session. Try pressing "Back" after logging out and see if you can see stuff or resume access as yourself. This is how it's supposed to work.
Avatar and photo handling uses the GD library that is everywhere... but our system. I recompiled it into the newest PHP 5.2.11, and fixed a few egarious PHP 4.x bugs from the original avatar / photo hack. Seems to be good now. Please test.
I've just upgraded to the latest PHP opcode cache, which should provide about 20% more throughput, which is great for me. For you folks, the forum should be a bit snappier, although the thing that slows us down the most is the cache policy.
thanks,

Yeah, I spent a fair bit of time working out the root cause of that.
1. PHP is a loosely typed piece of crap language.
The code was looking at
$state['uid']
instead of
$state['ubbuid']
like it was supposed to. And guess what - php -l (lint) didn't pick it up as an uninitialized variable, and neither did phpEclipse or Eclipse PDT. So it never found the right variable and the code never sent the cookie. :-( :-(
There was some other stuff as well, but that's the gist of the major reason why it didn't work.
I worked out why Avatars and photos are failing. GD is not compiled in. Thanks CentOS for that change!
Lastly, there's some PHP 4.x nastiness left - PHP changed a couple of constants we use from IMG_PNG to IMAGETYPE_PNG. It wouldn't have been too hard to leave the older ones in, eh?
There's a new version of PHP anyway, so I'll go compile it with GD support. This should be a relatively unnoticeable change for you folks.
I still have to log in every time I get on the computer and it still logs me off after a certain amount of time. does it make an difference if I am running Windows Vista? Cause I know that affects some ofther forums I frequent.....
ACCEPT THAT SOME DAYS YOU ARE THE PIDGEON AND SOME DAYS YOU ARE THE STATUE
sorry to be a pain....my avatar is 100 x 100, less than 15000bytes and it is still coming up with "unable to open, please verify that it exists".......what the??
i have it loaded onto photobucket and am copying and pasting the link, like I do with photos on my threads, but it keeps coming up with the message......any ideas for me to try?

I am running vista and internet explorer 8 and it works for me. Maybe something else is the issue with your computer?

@Scarab - just upload your avatar here using the button. Photobucket + avatars == very slow. Also, if you get too many hits for your avatar, Photobucket make the image go away.
If you get really stuck, please e-mail me admin @ aussieveedubbers.com with your avatar and I'll fix it for you.
Thanks Andrew, will try it out when I get home from work, Cheers!
While we are chatting, just wanted to thank you for the awesome work all you guys involved with this site put in. i don't exactly know who to thank, but THANK YOU ALL !! 😂
