Hi

I've read where VW made these in varying thicknesses and different length rods...

so You can end up with too high fuel pressure..

there are 2 differnt push rods, one for the gen, and one for the alternator. I dont know if the blocks are different though. I have heard of people putting extra gaskets in to reduce the fuel pressure....

There is a given measurement from top of spacer block to top of rod, don't know what it is but could find out tonight.

The way I remember is there is a different thickness spacer and a different length rod, you have to have them in the correct combination.

Taken from "scientific publications" workshop manual for 1600 beetle.
Renew the gaskets which fit above and below the intermediate flange with gaskets of the same thickness as those removed, gaskets must be selected with regard to the pushrod stroke. See PUMP STROKE ADJUSTMENT.
PUMP STROKE ADJUSTMENT
2) with both gaskets installed and the intermediate flange and pushrod in place, turn the engine by hand untill the pump pushrod is at the top of its stroke.
3) Holding the gasket and the flange firmly against the crankcase measure the distance from the top of the pushrod to the face of the top intermediate flange gasket using a depth gauge. The dimension should be 13mm (0.5 in )
4) If nescessary correct the dimention by placing an apropriate thicker or thinner gasket under the intermediate flange.

Hope this helps.

Cars made with the alternator have an offset fuel pump
as the standard fuel pump hits up against the Alternator..

cheers
