Some of you have been following the build-up of the four cars in the MOTOR magazine '$10K Challenge'. In a nutshell, the idea of the articles is to grab $10K, buy a car, modify it, test it and sell it!

One of the cars is a 1974 L-Bug.

Well, the numbers have been run (see it in the latest issue of MOTOR) and the cars will be for sale on Carsales.com.au early next week... I will post a link later

Hi Glen,

Paints the Beetle in a pretty good picture, I can't beleive you did not go for the Beetle yourself seeing as it used to be yours anyway.

A bit cruel they saying you should be buried under your casket.

Bloody Volvo Drivers.

Cheers,

David

👍👍

Who ever thought of it should get a pat on the back
Brings "garage mechanics" back to the modern world

Will be real interesting to see what they sell for.

Anyone wanting a well sorted dub should have a go.

I had a real good look under this can when it was on the hoist and couldnt believe how "cherry" it was
The floor pan was mint
Futue te ipsum!!!

My team put a lot of thought into our car choice: Of course I did a detailed budget on a kick-arse Beetle - it was the first car I considered. I concluded it was impossible for my team to build a Beetle to the level of performance and handling required to survive Luffy (!), within the timeframe, using retail channels of component sourcing (rather than my own 20-year collection of parts), for under $10K.

I was right! 😉

I also looked at Falcon and Commodore V8s - other cars I have extensive experience modifying - and a Nissan or two but decided the biggest *improvement* in performance came from stuffing a V8 into a Volvo. There were other factors involved, too, but I am happy with what we managed to do....

But for a loose wire in the distributor, I reckon we would have won the dyno and track sections of the Challenge... Oh well!

The articles seem popular - we're already planning next year's "Challenge". Any suggestions?!

Could be a good car for someone to get into roundy-rounds.

Hi Glenn,

How about a Power to Weight ratio competiton still keeping the car legal and emmissions to the cleanest level, this keeps everyone interetsed with Speed, Weight and polution eficiency. Then test on the Dyno, Strip and Track.

Cheers,

David
