Will a set of 36 horse axle tubes (from 56 beetle) fix an L Bug box without any concerns? Or are there issues? I'm hearing a little mixed info.

Thanks in advance 😘

Lbug box is IRS

I would say the tubes should fit with the appropriate diff and sideplates installed if it's a dual side plate of course. Dave could confirm I'm sure.

Here is the box in question, it was removed from a bog stock unmodified LBug (budget bug). I've been informed is a rarer type of LBug box, but I'm no box guru.

The tubes I have laying around are from a 36hp split case, 56 beetle box.

Any advice is appreciated.

yeah well it's a swing axle box for sure........not sure about 36 axles, but thinking yes they can be used.

you will have to have a matching set of axles and housings, ie long later model axles wont mix with the short early housings

Thanks for the info, I've got a heap of short axles to match the tubes. The box is only temporary until I get a little more $$$ to build the bullet proof box.

DB wasn't sure when I asked the same question 12 months ago. I ended up using 40hp axles and tubes so none the wiser here...

And Joel, I've been playing with these machines since before you were born, no disrespect cause you know a heap of stuff and I commend you for your quick responses regularly helping people out with info etc, BUT stop assuming every car is factory! They are ALL over 40 years old.

Yes, 36hp axles and tubes will bolt on,
provided the bearing caps used are the ones to suit the axle tubes.

Problem is the 36hp axles are weak and need the case splitting,(and the diff carrier disassembled) to retreive them.

Those 74 boxes from the 1300 are excellent, and have the exact same gear set as the L bug, except for the lower ratio 4.375 diff. (L-Bug is 3.875)
They also should come with the extra strong 15 and 10 tooth side gears.

I must have been lying to you Matt, or it was longer than 12 months ago.
We used 36hp axle tubes on Craig Hughes' gearbox
when it was built before the 2006(2007?) first Warwick event
He chose some mid sixties axles to use though, instead of the 36er ones.
Since been upgraed to SAW axles.

Matt, my apologies if i offended you
as usuall tact is MIA with most of my responses
i didnt realise at first Peter had a 1300 box not an Lbug box.
